  1. I'm interested if it remains available...
  2. @Themis.....I will definitely do that. Thanks for the help!
  3. okay so the picture of you can, again, illustrates why I'm confused. So many of these catch cans have the "in" and "out" ports at the top of the can, ABOVE the filter. I'm not sure how that bronze filter is supposed to be helpful if the sit below the entry point of where the oil mixture is entering the can. I also put a stainless steel scrubber in the bottom of mine but it just sat there soaking in the mixture...helpless. It seems like that would helpful if used as a filter, sitting above the oil at the bottom. Like a filter.....
  4. @Son of Marty....this was something else I was considering. I did not do that when I installed the thermostat and water pump a couple of weeks ago but saw it mentioned in one of my searches when looking into the issues. I will do that when I install the higher temp rated thermostat for sure. Is what you mentioned above all there is to that process? Elevate the nose, turn car on, heater valve open?
  5. @chargin....I like the look of that can, and your picture is a good illustration of what I'm talking about. I assume the the lower hose on the side of the can is coming from the valve cover and the top hose goes back to the intake. It would seem to me that there would need be a filter placed in the can above the valve hose and below the intake hose to keep any of the suspended oil from going into the intake line. In my can, the to ports are in the exact same level of the can with nothing separating them. As if the oil is supposed to just be trained to drop straight down. Yours looks to be of a better design than the one I bought....would like to see inside of it.
  6. Just an update on the heater issue....I contacted the supplier from whom I purchased the thermostat and they sent me a 71 rather than the 80 I requested. So that hopefully explains some if not all of this. Just going through a check list.... -My heater valve is opening and closing properly it would seem -The hoses at the fire wall could be hotter....hopefully the thermostat will improve -Both floor vents are opening and closing as should. -fan is pushing air @PhilC.....in regard to the fresh air flap, you CAN get a glimpse of the door with the box installed. I got on the passenger floor board with a flash light in my right hand, and used my left hand to slide the heater control on the dash back and forth. The brand new foam that I installed on the flaps during the rebuild probably helped its visibility because the flashlight picked up the shine of the material, but I could see it opening and closing. There is always a possibility that when closing it doesn't get all the way flush, but seeing it go back and forth was enough evidence for me to feel comfortable with it. Especially since I checked them all before install and don't remember anything that would cause concern. So I am going to install another thermostat with the higher temp rating and see what that does. I'm hoping that the lower rated thermostat was enough to give me hot air when the fan is off and not pushing it, but just not hot enough to keep up with all that air being forced. Sound possible? We'll see....
  7. @2002iii....it was a chlorastat (sp?). I called the place I ordered it from today and asked if they sent me an 80 like I asked for and they in fact did not. They sent me a 71....so that hopefully explains some of the issues I have with the car not reaching a high enough operating temp and hopefully explains why my heat is not working at full capacity.
  8. @2002iii.....I actually have a VDO gauge in the console that reads about 175 when driving. It was around 185-190 before the new thermostat. I feel it has lessened the heat coming from my vents as well but. Still looking into that
  9. @2002iii....I definitely have some blow by. The engine feels strong and runs great so I assume it's an acceptable amount for a 52 year old motor. I just dumped probably 5 oz. of what appeared to be a gas, oil, sludge mix after a couple thousand miles of driving. I do feel as though the can almost caused more to be pulled from the motor than I was getting when I just had a hose running below the car. I never really noticed much on the undercarriage or garage floor but thought that catching the oil was certainly better than dumping it everywhere. I also recently installed a new thermostat and the car runs much cooler than I would like it to....around 175 degrees. It sits barely out of the blue at driving temperature. So couldn't that increase the loss from the pistons as well? I haven't done a compression check on the motor but again it feels strong and there is no smoke or any other symptoms of worry.
  10. Hey everyone! I've been using several "catch can" threads here on the forum to make a plan for my car. I had a hose running from the PCV down below the car as it was when I bought it. It was getting some spray on my undercarriage so I decided to buy a cheap catch can on ebay. Hose from the motor to the can, and then the little filter that came with the can coming off the "out" port on the can. The can made a mess and leaked the oil mixture out of the filter constantly. Upon inspection of the can and research on what these cans are supposed to do it seems odd to me that most of the cans have the "in" and "out" ports sharing a chamber at the the top of the can. Yes there is some sort of baffle in that chamber but sitting below the ports so I'm not sure how a good amount of oil mixture isn't suppose to go straight into the little filter and spill out. I've thought about making making my own like those that have retrofitted a Coleman propane tank but I don't see how those separate the oil either. My understanding is that a catch can will need a filter inside the can through which the oil mixture would need to pass, into a separate chamber of sorts for the air to then pass through. Sort of like this picture. I would not feel comfortable running a hose from the can back to the intake on my Weber after seeing what came out of the can filter. If I were going to make one wouldn't it need to be a two piece container where I could place a dish/scrub pad or some sort of filter above where the blow by mixture comes in and then replace when it gets dirty? Or is my eBay can simply a piece of junk. It was catching oil but almost as much was trying to escape through the breather.
  11. @Mike Self.....this seems like a possibility. When testing that, by having the slider all the way to heat (which should close the fresh air flap), the floor vents open, and the blower off, I don't feel the cool air like I do when the fan comes on. Could it be that the fan simply makes the cold air from the fresh air flap more noticeable? I think not, as the air without the fan is noticeably warmer than it is when the fan is on. With the fan on I can actually feel really cold patches of air when I put my hand down to my feet and then other spots where it feels warmer. Some of the patches almost feel as cold as air would coming in through a cracked window....and it's in the 30's here after dark. But the overall mix still ends up being warmer than that of course, which is why I use the word blended. The cabin gets to a survivable temperature after running it for quite some time. Maybe there is in fact something not sealed of flush as @Themis suggested. I will investigate the fresh air flap some more tomorrow. Thanks for all the ideas....let me know if you have anything else I should consider!
  12. Ahhh Jim you raise an interesting point. I have a '71, but I installed a box from a later car. It was the first one I found here in the FAQ in decent shape. I took the sliders off of the box and retrofitted early cables to match the panels in my car. The entire system had been deleted from my car by a previous owner. Long story short I bought the box before I was aware of the differences in the cables and sliders and such. To answer your question, if I put the temperature on hot, and open the vents to the floor, but leave the fan off, I feel hot air "walking" into the cabin at the floor. If I turn the fan on (low or high since my car has the two speed pull knob on the dash below the head light switch) the air starts to "run" into the cabin, but the temperature of the air gets noticeably cooler. Still has some warmth to it but like I said it feels like it has mixed with some cold air or something. I almost get more benefit in terms of heating by leaving the fan off and having the hot air just filter in slowly with the vents open.
  13. Hello all! I have a heat issue that has me stumped. I rebuilt the heater box before install and rebuilt the heater control valve.... original brass style valve. I do in fact have heat but it seems to only work, or work as it should I would say, when the fan is off. If the fan is off with the floor vents open and I'm driving down the road, I can feel the slightly greater than trickle of heat into the floor board and it is pretty hot. Feels great! When I turn the fan on that burst of heat disappears in a couple of seconds and is replaced with warm-ish air that almost feels blended. I don't feel like it has been that way the entire time since I replaced the heater box to be honest. Before I realized that it might be a problem only when the fan came on, I replaced the thermostat and water pump. Did not fix the problem. In fact it might have slightly cooled off the air coming in when the fan is off as well. Before that it would almost burn my ankles. I read in my searches that some heater ills have been cured by burping the coolant system, but it doesn't seem like that would be the case here since I do feel good heat coming in when the fan is off. If really does feel like blended air. Could the fan be installed wrong? Wouldn't that cause no air to be blowing into the cabin? There is a noticeable push of air into the cabin when I turn the fan speeds on. The car has always run cool. The needle would rest at about 4 o'clock before the thermostat change earlier this week. Now it rests just out of the blue which seems really cool to me. But again, I do feel good heat coming in when the fan is off and I'm driving down the road. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance! Rob
  14. @Einspritz....thanks so much! So with the box installed I am turning the steering wheel lock to lock but counting the revolutions at the box? And then finding the center by dividing the revolutions by two? And that should be the center of the box and where I need to set the wheel to straight?
  15. Ahhhh....okay so if I align all the lines then it should be correct, and I can simply adjust the steering wheel to straight if it does not match up?
  16. Okay are you referring to the line/notch that are on the box and the pitman arm? Unfortunately I didn't remove this box myself as I had it lying around as a spare. So I used a rebuild kit and adjusted the lash screw in preparation for putting it in. The reason for the season ultimately is that the pitman arm that is currently on my car has some dangerous looking play against the center link so I figured I would take the box and arm off at the same time and put a new arm and rebuilt box back on the car. But I digress ... I'm just worried that when putting it all back together I will have it all mal- aligned. Which would defeat the purpose of having adjusted the box....which feels nice and tight by the way
  17. Hey everyone! I'm installing a freshly rebuilt and adjusted steering box on my '71 2002 and I'm looking for some help on how this all gets centered up. Forgive me if I was unable to find this info in my searches but all I was able to find was how the box itself actually gets installed....which is super helpful for that part of it. My concern with this post is how I get the box on center and everything aligned that way. I know that there is a notch on the pitman arm that aligns with a notch on the box...is it that simple? Do I simply adjust the steering wheel from there. I'm thinking if the steering box is turned off center when I install it then I'm already in trouble? Rob
  18. Super classy in Sahara! What seats do we have going on in there?
  19. Nothing like providing completely unsolicited, negative feedback to fellow members about their cars for them to read! You must be a lot of fun to hang out with at parties! I think your car is terrific looking for what it's worth. Happy New Year
  20. I agree that Sahara is lovely....biased perhaps but I love it!
  21. Hey all! Looking for the arm attaching the steering box to the center link. I think it is called a pitman arm but perhaps that's other models. Anyway mine has a great deal of play. I have found these for sale with the steering box attached but I just need the arm. I know they can be difficult to remove from the box but I was hoping someone had one to spare. Let me know! Rob
  22. I don't know friends, it's all about the body after all. If it's a round tail light car with very little rust and runs and stops nicely?? We're not too far off here. The tiny bits like glass and grills are kind of a bummer, but I wish I had started my project with something this solid looking. Makes me want to start all over again! Good luck
  23. First time posting any pictures of our '71 Saraha 2002 that my Dad and I brought back to life. Not the best location for photos but I'll find a better place next time.
  24. @visionaut....look I tried to take the high road but what is the deal with seeking out conflict here? The pictures in your link had two contact points, mine has three. perhaps experts know that that difference doesn't change anything but not all of us here are experts and are seeking out the help of people who know more. Should I have guessed on what to do with the third solder point on my motor? Soldering these leads is not something I'm interested in screwing up or doing twice. The picture Mark sent me looks exactly like what I'm looking at on my coffee table right now. It helped. I am appreciative of any and all responses that I get when I reach out on this forum and was appreciative of yours as well. Just didn't give me the confidence to start soldering away when I wasn't sure. Now I am. What is wrong with that? You literally came BACK to this thread just to say something demeaning. Again I appreciate the help you provided and apologize for not having been able to do more with it. But at the end of the day someone came through with what I was looking for so it all worked out. Rob
  25. @Mark92131......this is exactly what I needed! Thanks so much! Rob
