  1. Hi John! It wasn't Although when I bought the car in 2016 it had just been replaced with a used unit.
  2. Hi all! Just got my '73 back from E&E Restoration in Broadway VA. I've noticed a knocking / clunking sound in the rear when turning at low speeds and a shrill whine at low RPM. Does anyone know a good mechanic in the area DMV area? Thanks in advance!
  3. Hi all, I was wondering if anyone had a comprehensive list of all the seals needed on an 02 sedan? I was planing to order them from Walloth & Nesch, but I want to make sure I got them all. Also, has anyone used the URO seals available domestically? I've seen mixed reviews, but they sure are much cheaper. Thanks, Stew
  4. Fantastic Ideas both, I'm going to try the hairdryer idea as soon as i get the car back from the upholstery shop. If I can't make it work, I'll go with the vent holes. Thanks much!
  5. Thanks everyone for the replies. Losing the defrost is probably the thing that worries me most. I would happily rebuild the heater box, but it really is a shambles.
  6. I didn't know this could even be done. Does it require metal cutting?
  7. Hi all, I am about to receive my '73 02 back from the body shop. It has been welded, POR15ed, rhino-lined, and painted. My vision for the car is a light, tight, weekend driver when the weather is nice. I am attempting to keep it as spartan as possible. Before it goes to the upholstery shop I would like to solve a nagging hangup. I have decided to remove the heater box permenately . I know that this sort of talk tends to illicit gasps of horror from people, but I really don't plan to drive it when its cold out and my heating system is TRASHED. Anyway, my question..what is the best way to plug up the hole where the box sits and how should I redirect the plumbing for the cooling system? I assume I will need to run less coolant? Thanks, Kyle
  8. Jerry! BINGO! You nailed it! I pulled the heater box today and found the source of all of my troubles...
  9. Thanks Mike, I have heard wonderful things about the POR 15 products. May be a place for them here shortly.
  10. Good evening! So i've been scraping and heat gunning and going to try dry ice on the rear floor pans tomorrow. Picked up some stripping discs and such today, not much to report. still working!
  11. Okay so never mind, I was thinking it might take a while if i had to do it with a drill! Angle grinder it is then! Can't wait for tomorrow!
  12. Thanks for the replies! I have finished the majority of the scraping in the front left and right floor pans. Unfortunately, I've discovered a pretty nasty cut of rust in the middle of the drivers side. Seems to be right under the fuel line... The source of the leak appears to be from atop the trans tunnel where the right plug is missing. Good save Toby! I definitely was about to start angle grinding tomorrow! I will be drill stripping instead now! What do we think about this left floor pan and pedal box? seems that we've got a major defect here?? Best, Stew
  13. Question, before I start using the heat gun around these hoses which appear to both have something to do with the gas tank, what sort of precautions should I be tanking? Can I disconnect them for now? What do they go to? Seems like the fuel line is all that should be coming from the tank? Stew Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  14. Thanks very much for all the interest and helpful replies! I will be spending the rest of the day scraping and grinding. Will take some pictures of the car and post tonight! Stew
  15. Yes, I went to Lowes and picked up a couple but it looks like they may be the wrong size for my cheapo angle grinder. Going back to have another shot at it. To be fair to the guy that did it, he did mention (one) rust hole near the accelerator pedal. He told me it was minor and shouldn't dissuade me from buying. However, this same guy had just replaced the pedal bushings a couple months before the PPI so I feel sure that he knew more than he let on. Good dude, but I think in this case because he knew both the buyer and seller, he wasn't capable of being impartial. My fault as much as his... Haha we'll see about the welding. I'm setting to work now removing more tar and then will decide once the surface rust is stripped. Will definitely be checking out the youtube videos you recommended. Gonna need all the motivation there is! Thanks Zach Thanks
  16. There is certainly a leak and may be more than one given the dampness of the sound deadening. I know that the heater fan is seized and that the previous owner had looked into replacing it but never did.
  17. That's great news! I will report back when the angle grinder arrives from amazon.
  18. I see, So not so far gone as to need a new floor pan, as long as the welds on the frame rail are good? I'll check it out in the morning! Thanks Simeon!
  19. Hi all, I'm fairly new here and to '02s in general. I have uncovered some nasty surprises in my very first 2002. I was hoping some of you more experienced fellows might be able to point the way for me. Back in March, I bought a 73 roundie from out of town, had a BMW tech do a PPI for me and very little rust was detected. HOWEVER, when I set about removing the aftermarket stereo and moldy carpets, I noticed that underneath the carpet the cardboard material was damp. In addition, once the center console was removed quite a bit of surface rust become visible. Being quite put off by this, I decided to remove all the carpets and and sound deadening material this past weekend. A few hours with the 5n1 and heat gun, this is what I discovered... RUST EVERYWHERE! So what to do now? I guess I should let clarify what I'm after out of the car and what resources I'm working with.. Ultimate Goal: A barebones 2002 that is a reliable and fun summer daily driver. No need for concourse medals or satellite radio in this one! Original parts and trim can go hang as long as it looks to the casual eye as though the car might have come from BMW (i.e. not seeking fender flares or 2200" wheels). We are after carefree fun and enjoyment here. At least for now. Mechanical Aptitude: Guys I'll be honest, on the Pelican parts talent scale, I'm sitting at a solid two wrenches, but would love to increase that! Tooling: I have a ratchet set. Financial Resources: I've budgeted exactly $4500 to put into the care and repair of the car until January. Now that is out of the way, what should I do gents? I have a shameful $8000 in this one. Debating whether to sell and cut my losses or ride it out. Thanks in advance, Stew
  20. Not sure if you're still looking, but I do have a complete blue back seat set. PM me if still interested.
  21. Just ordered a used 117 for $125! Found that like the 101, the 115 is made in China. I'll go $20 more for American made Thanks again for all the help!
  22. Hey guys, thanks for all the responses! I definitely have a "cry once" philosophy with tools. My wipers recently stopped working except on wiper fluid mode. I want to get a multimeter to figure out what is wrong. Just want to be sure I get one that will have all the features I will eventually need. In short yes, I see tools as investments and would like the best, but don't want to pay for features I will never use. Thanks, Kyle
