  1. All these replies are great! Thank you. Time to get a shopping list made up.
  2. Quick question. Whats on everyones road trip shopping list? I'm planing a long road trip in my 2002tii at the start of May. I'm going to be a long way from home and I'm thinking I should bring a few parts with me to reduce the chance of getting stranded. I'm going to bring the usual extra oil, coolant, fuel and maybe brake fluid. Though is there any common reasons for breakdowns? Anything that I shouldn't be without on a long trip? I'm not great when it comes to using a spanner but there's going to be a few of us going, and some of the other drivers are great home mechanics, so there shouldn't be many side of the road fixes out of reach.
  3. I got the tyres off the wheels today and took some better photos. Theres a few weird marks lacquer, that I took some pictures of. Other than that, the wheels are in tip top condition. The wheels have also been ceramic coated, so their really easy to clean. Offers are welcome!
  4. They are 5” but I’m unsure about the offset. I just popped out to the lock up where they’re kept and there isn’t anything stamped in them. They were an Italian dealership option for the 2002 back in the 70’s. Mine are stamped 73. The caps I bought separately, I was told they are new old stock but they’re plastic and I’m 99% sure they aren’t. Though I’ve painted them and they look perfect. Tyres will be removed before they’re shipped. Here’s a link for more info on them. The top picture in the thread are my ones!
  5. 13' MOMO Cloverleafs for sale. Price is £1250 ($1600) this includes shipping worldwide. I bought them from Italy and had them powder coated and diamond cut. They look great! I had them on my car for a couple of years and have since moved onto bigger wheels.
  6. So are you saying it couldn’t be the bolt in the wrong place, because I’m able to select and drive in 5th? Also, I’ve used the same upper linkage for all 3 gearboxes. So if it’s the linkage, then it would have to be the inner linkage going into the gearbox? The other new noisy gearbox isn’t coming out of the car until the 31st. My mechanic unfortunately is super busy. So once it’s out of the car I suppose we can compare the 2 side by side to see if it’s anything obvious. And then take them both to hopefully someone local, who knows what their doing.
  7. I got a reply from Jaymic after he asked their gearbox guy for advice. Hi Chris Finally spoke to him! He reckons if it was jumping out of gear under load then that would probably mean the box needs a rebuild, but if its jumping out when its not under load its more likely to be an issue with the linkage – either its not been modified to quite the right length or more likely there’s wear in the moving parts somewhere, so I’d start by going over that carefully and checking the various bushes, ball cups and the knuckle joint. I’ve known it to happen to four speeds when the linkage is worn so I wouldn’t be surprised if the same things happened with the five speed. Kindest Regards Pete
  8. Pete from Jaymic said he would ask his gearbox guy for any advice but I’m worried it’s the same person. Lol. James at JFI worked on my car back in 2019 before all this and actually told me I definitely needed the gearbox rebuilt. Though he couldn’t recommend anyone because he said he’s had issues with so many gearboxes from multiple rebuilders.
  9. Thanks, I’m based in Northern Ireland and the “specialist” is England. To be fair, if I was local to them then they would be the ones removing and fitting the gearboxes. And I wouldn’t be so much out of pocket with having to pay labour to my mechanic. When they sent the latest gearbox, they also agreed to refund me some money to cover the labour cost. Though I’m yet to hear back from them about the latest faulty one. I’m sure their just as frustrated as myself. So hopefully it’s going to be linkage with the second box. I’ll have it fixed locally, I’ll use parts from the latest box if necessary. Then I’ll post whatever’s left back to them and fingers crossed they’ll refund me enough to cover some of the costs. Then I’ll notch up the rest to experience as well. The most annoying thing is not being able to enjoy the car fully during all this nice weather!
  10. I can’t now. That was the second gearbox. Which is now out of the car. I’d have to have it put back in again. I’m confident it wasn’t something like that. I would of felt it hit something when I put in 5th. And when it was warmed up, it went into 5th totally fine. Would happily stay in 5th while I was accelerating and would only pop out when I came off the throttle.
  11. I can't remember which kit I'm using. I bought it on ebay back when I was doing the restoration in 2017. The kit worked fine for the first 2 gearboxes as they didn't have any vibrations so I think its good. I have good confidence in my mechanic so I doubt the gearbox would be rubbing without him noticing. He mentioned he ran the car up on the lift and held a stethoscope to the gearbox and he could hear the noise. How do I check the linkage? And would it be the linkage if it stays in gear ok while under load? Reverse was perfect and just a normal oem shift boot.
  12. Attention anyone that knows a lot about these gearboxes. I'm having a nightmare with getting my e21 getrag 245 5 speed overdrive rebuilt. This time last year I sent my 5 speed off to be rebuilt by a UK company who specialises in them. The gearbox was crunching going into second, and the bearings were very noisy. After a great expense it came back looking good. Though once fitted in the car it was leaking oil badly. The company where very apologetic and after a few months they sent me another rebuilt gearbox and I posted back the leaky one. I had to pay my local mechanic a second time to swap the gearboxes. This time the gearbox was almost perfect, no noise, no leaks and would change into every gear smoothy except 5th. The 5th gear would not only be a struggle but would pop out of 5th when the car wasn't on load. You would be cruising in 5th, lift off, and it would pop out. I would hold it in 5th with my hand when driving on the motorway. So once again, the company was apologetic and again, after a few months, they sent me out yet another gearbox. I've had to pay my mechanic to swap them a 3rd time. This gearbox is the worst yet, its noisy and vibrates massively. Though at least it does go into gear, and stay in gear. I've obviously given up on the company. And after a year and a great expense, I don't want them to send me out another one. So heres my plan. I have yet to send back the 2nd gearbox with the popping out 5th gear. As this is the better than the latest one, I want to take it to another gearbox specialist. I want to use the 3rd vibrating one for its parts to help fix the 2nd one. Then I can send back whats left of the 3rd one to the original rebuilder and hope for a refund. As the next company I'm going to use is a general gearbox rebuilder, they are unlikely to work on many classic car gearboxes. So I would like to give them as much info as possible. It would be good to be able to tell them what the likely cause is. So if you had a rebuilt gearbox, that pops out of 5th gear when not on load, then what would be your likely diagnoses? Thanks.
  13. Was it not only 100 miles because the petrol tank is so small?
  14. Awesome build. The attention to detail on your car is outstanding! Whats Jay like in real life? I love that he's 100% interested in everything you have to say, and clearly just enjoys doing his videos. I'm he doesn't "need" to them, but he clearly just likes to chat to other enthusiasts. Did he give you a tour of the garage?
  15. I got my wheels from Frank last year. And I’m happy with them. They took longer than expected (3 months instead of 1) and the red centre caps I requested never arrived. I asked him a few times to send the centre caps. I gave up after a while and bought some on German eBay. I hope everyone gets their wheels ok. I was a bit worried about the payment upfront and refusing to use PayPal etc. Though I figured he was legit because so many 02ers use him. I think if I had of read this first I would of stayed clear.
  16. Awesome, I’ll see you there. Anyone else making the trip from Ireland?

    Car is finished!

So its been a while since I've added anything to the blog. The car was finished in October. Just in time for winter in Ireland. With crappy weather and salted roads here, I've only managed 200 miles in 5 months. Though the weather is finally starting to get better and the car is finally being driven! The car was lucky enough to be featured on the cover of Retro Classics magazine. (Irish car mag) I plan to take it to plenty of shows this summer. First show is this weekend, me and my dad are taking the car over the Irish Sea to the Practical Classics Magazine show at the NEC centre in Birmingham, England. The car will be featured at the BMW Car Club GB stand. https://www.necrestorationshow.com The car is driving great though there's a few niggles to sort out before the long drive, including its running in service.
