  1. I've owned 7 '02s since high school and I always assumed the suspension components (subframes, trailing arms, etc) were originally black in color. Just recently, JP (A1 Imports) and Delia educated me to the effect that everything actually arrived from the factory in a distinctive, olive green shade. They showed me as much when they stripped the black repaint off of some components...so that's what we're doing! It's actually not as attractive as black (in my personal opinion) but I'm going for factory-correct wherever possible. Just thought I'd share... COOP
  2. My favorite is "One Grand Chrome Cleaner & Polish." I've been using it for years and it ROCKS! See: http://store.carcareonline.com/onegrandchromecleanerandpolish-16ozbottle.aspx This is my favorite website for detailing products/know-how. It has some great "How To" advise and comprehensive reviews on a myriad of products:http://store.carcareonline.com/index.aspx COOP
  3. JP at A1 Imports bought a kit to plate all appropriate hardware as we move towards reassembly on my Baikal '72 tii...It really dresses things up and is a lot cheaper than replacing every piece of hardware! COOP
  4. Lol, it's coming Steve, I promise! I just need to bust out of work and run down to JP's shop to snap off a few pix. Hopefully today... Thanks, COOP
  5. Thank you Ian! Great to hear from one of the original M2 pioneers who started the whole movement way back when. You were an inspiration to many, including me! COOP
  6. Er, that would be "Baikal." Beautiful color! More blue than the Baltic M2...can't wait to see them together...
  7. Nice to hear from you Nick. Life is good but would be better if I had more free time to drive...and to take a break from the grind at Le Foulon! I really have nothing to gripe about but the work/live balance Stateside is completely out of whack (and yes, it's true that we all choose our lot). Anyways, the M2 Evo is better than ever as I recently pulled the motor and did a major refresh. My big 02 activities right now relate to a low-mileage, Bailal '72 tii that I was recently reunited with...should be completed within another month or two. Thanks for speaking up and good luck with M2 MkII! COOP
  8. Thanks guys & gals...looking forward to getting to the bottom of this one! I'll check for a part number the next time I'm at the shop. The good news is that I haven't stroked the check yet... COOP
  9. Nothing better to clear the head...She's never run better and the cool air just makes her sing!
  10. Thanks John...Will have to wait until the next time I'm at the shop...but for now, it's just as I said: The 43 year old wheel on my car is black, as is every other original 02 wheel I've ever laid eyes upon. This NOS one in the wrapper is very obviously gray, just a touch darker than a military ship but nothing even close to black or even dark, charcoal gray. Very strange! I haven't agreed to buy it yet and probably won't unless someone here educates me to the effect that these wheels were originally gray which doesn't seem likely... 11. Hello, The original steering wheel on my '72 tii (same with every other 02 that I've ever encountered with an original steering wheel) is clearly black in color. I just acquired a "New Old Stock" steering wheel, still wrapped in the original packaging. It is distinctly grey in color, almost a battleship gray. Any insight into this?! Did they make both colors (highly doubtful)? Did the original gray color change to black over the past 43 years on all of those old 02s? Is the black correct and the gray on the NOS wheel incorrect? Was the gray NOS wheel black at some point but then faded to gray due to storage conditions? Thank you, COOP
  12. JP Cadoux at A-1 Imports in San Rafael. Meticulous, superbly skilled and honest as the day is long. He has worked on my cars for 14 years and I can't sing his praise loudly enough... http://www.a1autoworks.com/a12010/ COOP
  13. Just a few pix from the mechanical refreshing of my "new" '72 tii with 54K original miles which is progressing at a good clip. Compression was great (158 on all 4 cylinders) so we didn't need to do anything to the block other than strip, clean, reseal, paint, etc...Cylinder head was sent out for a complete valve job "just because." Will post more pix as she gets further along! COOP
  14. WOW! Very stunning interior! I like the glam look of that...Not my personal style but REALLY cool! COOP
  15. No problem at all Esty...The links were helpful, as were the personal responses. I appreciate your help. COOP Thank you! Great resources... COOP
  16. Ahh yes, I forgot how some folks respond if you ask a question that they feel you should have taken to the search bar first! I haven't been active on the board for years and some of the idiosyncracies are coming back to me now lol! Yes Esty, I know I coulda/shoulda checked the archives...I posted because I was hoping to get some "real-time" info based on recent experiences & impressions...and because I was looking for the personal interaction of individual's responses. Thanks though... COOP
  17. Looking for a soft cover that fits perfectly, exclusively for indoor use. Any pix or info would be much appreciated! COOP
  18. Getting everything immaculate and ready for reassembly...So satisfying to see it progress! COOP
  19. Hi there! I know, the "new member" thing bugs me! Maybe Steve K can help me to fix that! What happened was I couldn't for the life of me remember my new password and so I just got exasperated and "rejoined" with a new one...COOP
  20. Hello Marshall! The Baltic Blau M2 evo is pure nirvana...better than ever before. I pulled the motor this past year and had JP/A1 go through everything as some seals needed replacing. He took the opportunity to clean/replace/repaint/re-plate everything he could find and to re-do the wiring harness. I also updated to the big-bore (Evo-spec) TBs & air horns from VAC and had the car retuned to take that into account. Other than that, we sent the head out to be port-matched to the big TBs (and did a complete valve job while it was out, why not?), rebuilt the pedal box, added some chassis beef where the firewall, inner fender and frame rail meet and a few other odds and ends. I always dreamed of having the hot rod M2 and a bone stock tii side by side in the garage...now I've finally gotten my wish! Best, COOP PS: M2 Photo from long ago, courtesy of the great Michael Dubois!
  21. One day in 1998 while walking home from work, I randomly stumbled upon a 100% original and complete Sahara 1972 BMW sunroof 2002tii covered with dust and sitting forlornly in a Manhattan Parking Garage. It had been sitting there for many years and had been appropriated by the garage due to non-payment of parking fees by the car's original owner who had simply vanished. After some back and forth discussion, I bought the car from the garage and discovered that it only had 49K original miles which was supported by extensive service records in the glove box going back to 1972. Also in the box was the car's original window sticker. In the trunk were all tools/jack, spare (with XAS tire), factory mud-flaps in plastic, factory styrofoam replacement kit (bulbs, filters, belts), etc. I got the car back to my shop and we got it running without too much expense or problems beyond fluids, filters, belts, hoses, tires, exhaust, etc. I started driving it around NYC and it ran extremely strong...like a charm in fact without any smoking or oil burning whatsoever. I was in love! Several months after buying it, my ad agency boss and friend convinced me through various pressure tactics to regretfully sell him the car and to manage a complete cosmetic restoration for him (he was no car guy). I found a high-end place in Stamford CT that restored vintage Astons, Porsches & Lambos (they also had a BMW 507 there for complete restoration) and he spent $55K on a bare shell, rotisserie restoration. Total originality (with the exception of a color change to Baikal Blue as he hated the Sahara) was the focus and nearly every piece of sheetmetal, chrome & rubber was replaced (East Coast car so it did have some rust). Mechanically, seals, belts & hoses were replaced but nothing was rebuilt or restored to the level of the cosmetics. In 2000, I moved to San Francisco. In the 14 years since my friend/former boss had the car back from restoration, he drove it a whopping 4K miles. Well, to make a short story long, I just bought the car back from him and had it shipped here to the Bay Area! It is still cosmetically flawless but is a big leaky mess (engine, trans, diff, etc). The car is currently at my shop in San Rafael (A1 Imports) where we are bringing all mechanicals to the same level as the cosmetics. The car should be done within two months and will hopefully be one of the nicer, more original and lower-mileage '72 tiis in existence when it is complete. I am SO happy as it feels as though destiny led me to find the car in that garage 16 years ago...and now destiny has blessed me with the opportunity to own this wonderful car again. I can't wait for Brisbane as that will be the car's "debutante ball." Thought I'd share, COOP PS: The purists will note "incorrect" '73 bumpers in the picture which we are in the process of addressing! At the time of the restoration, I donated the bumpers from my '73 S14-powered tii as the bumpers on the '72 were nasty.
  22. Thank you very much for the insight Steve & others...Definitely sounds like finding a donor vehicle is the best bet if original appearance is the goal Pictures of the new baby and the tale behind it (quite a wonderful story actually) to come shortly...
  23. Thank you for that! Do you know how "close" in appearance and quality the World Upholstery reproductions come to the original basket weave? Much appreciated... COOP
  24. Hello! Any insight into OEM upholstery resources? I've of course heard of the repro products from World Upholstery which I'm told are quite good (yes/no?)...However, "Sid's" in Mountain View, CA (any feedback on them btw?) apparently sources "genuine" vinyl from a place called "Veteran" which I had never heard of. I just acquired a 1972 tii with 54K documented original miles. The interior is very nice but the driver's seat has a split in it. Any info would be much appreciated (and yes, I did search the archives in an attempt to spare the lives of any innocent puppies/kittens). I'm going for originality with this car and so your feedback is invaluable! TIA, COOP '72 tii #2760754 '73 M2tii #2764282
