My 1600 was rear-ended last weekend and I am now left with a 90% complete engine in my basement that doesn't have a home.
I will try to find as many receipts as I can but for now I'll explain what I have:
I used Lonnie Jensen in San Francisco for machine work. I brought in three heads for them to choose from (you can get the other two for free). They checked both block and head for cracks. The head was cleaned and the block is painted black. When they measured the cylinders they told me that they were already one size over so I had to get larger pistons or a new block.
I contacted Racetep (JE piston distributor) and they recommended to go up one size with larger, forged pistons. The engine now has forged 91.5 mm pistons installed in the block.
The block was bored, honed and planed by the shop. They mounted the pistons to the connecting rods with new pins etc. The crank was inspected and polished. There was no need to go down a size. I used new bearings and bolts for mounting the rod bearings and the crank bearings. I checked the clearance with plastigauge. The pistons were coated with red line assembly lube per JE recommendations (I know some prefer motor oil).
The head was assembled by Lonnie Jensen. NEW HD springs, NEW standard valves, NEW Febi rockers, NEW rocker arms, USED Shrick 292 camshaft. Obviously all the stuff was done to the head. 3 angle valve job, new valve seals and guids etc.
The oil pump is used but I replaced the housing (with the piston) and the inner rotor. New oil chain and oil sprocket.
The timing chain is new, the timing tensioner is new.
I found a NOS flywheel 228 mm diameter. It even has new teeth. You can't find those anymore so this is a one of a kind.
All hardware is new since I didn't buy the engine complete (this was a pain). I ordered every single screw from BMW of South Atlanta.
I used ARP bolt (torqued to 82 ft. lb). You might want to torque them to 90. I used an MLS head headgasket.
New crank gaskets. all covers are mounted with Curil K2 gasket seal.
The oil sump is not mounted onto the engine yet so feel free to check whatever you want before mounting. Also, the valve cover is not mounted yet. The valve cover is not beautiful as is. I was planning on refinishing that.
I would say that this is overall a very good deal. I've only used good parts for everything and I have definitely spent the double of what I am asking.
Machine shop $1300
Pistons and other parts from racetep $1200
block and head $500
crank $250
new flywheel $200
all other parts (water pump, timing chain, head parts, oil pump parts, gauges, seals, head studs, hardware etc etc) $$$
Please email me if there's an interest. The engine is on an engine stand and you can take the stand with the engine mounted on it. No shipping or delivery.
I'll add the 4 into 1 exhaust as well. It's stamped with 320l
Thanks
Jonas
