Made the offer $2k, waiting on response...

Couldn't open trunk but someone had cut speaker holes in the deck and...
?did '73's have single barrel Solex?

Update: Car is complete minus the keys. So how much?? Interior appears to have been redone. Carpet ok, seats are foam filled. Rear seat stitched, fronts seats velour inserts. Console recovered with matching vinyl and lined with carpet. Headliner looks to have been replaced. Mileage more like 123k or 223k. No oil leaks other than possibly valve cover. Radiator intact (I filled it). Spark plugs oily but may be due to Marvel Mystery oil put in 2 weeks ago. Peeked under valve cover cap and saw nothing unusual. Shiny parts peeking back at me, light brown oil inside. So $500 too low but is $2k too much as a starting point? It doesn't run so it's most def a project for the future.

Going to look at a '73 Golf 2002 VIN 2590178 this weekend. It was previously discussed on this board due to the outrageous price being asked by the owner via Craigslist. Owner simply didn't know the car or value and looked online at all of your nice daily drivers, upgraded vehicles and show quality cars then wagged it.
I own the below '71 Golf 2002.
A buddy of mine took a look since the car is in his neighborhood and took the below photos. He stated the car looked complete from what he could tell with no indication of damage or modification except the 32/36 and the steering wheel. Seats and carpet look suspect in the photos (cloth seats, decent but old carpet). Will be looking closely this Saturday.
This will be a buy and store for a future stock rebuild car. No frills, not a show car, just a project car for down the road. I know what the project costs will be but.. My best offer isn't gonna be much. No keys, sat outside since 2004, registration lapsed so cost to register will be $600+ when its drivable. I'm not inclined to pay more than $500 for the chance to have a younger sister for mine. Thoughts?

Have u attempted to replace the dip switch?

Try Maximillian Imports (BMW Mobile Tradition)

I'm not even concerned about the law. The Twenty years I've been using them now makes me want to question every job they ever did for me.
-
Again, no estimate received. Ever. Work is complete, I've had the car 2 weeks and they finally got around to the bill.
They certainly won't be forced to take any more of my work like this cuz I'm either going elsewhere with all my cars or doing it myself.
-
Didn't want to go thru the whole story on the board but Here goes:
I've dealt with this shop for almost 20 years. They've taken care of 3 BMWs for me and now started doing some work on the Golf Yellow '72 I purchased 8 months ago. To let u know what their history is with my cars here is a snippet.
My 1976 3.0Si - I sourced a used 635i motor, tranny and driveshaft. They fabricated what was needed to complete the install, got it in and tuned for CA DMV cert.
'72 Golf: I needed the items done I listed so I left the car early December and asked for an estimate. Two weeks later asked for an estimate. After Christmas asked for a timeline and estimate. Got a call early January after asking again and was told to come pick the car up, drive over the weekend and call back Monday. Did that, and my guy could not give me a number stating tech working on it had put in too many hours and he would sort it out and let me know.
Fast forward to yesterday when I got a call saying first cut was 23 hours of work plus the driveshaft outsource. He Cut to 12 hours and driveshaft outsource. $1750 total.
I'm shocked. No estimate ever. 12 hours? I don't think that's reasonable. I've removed two gearboxes and driveshafts from junkyard cars in the last month with my tools and no lift. Took 4 hours each. I'm not a seasoned mechanic but I'm no idiot.
-
Oh yeah, I changed the guibo on the car myself when I got it and the shop gave it the once over so I could generate a punch list.
-
Have u tried replacing the dip switch?
-
Problem is I've heard 12 hours and 4 hours. Too big a gap to consider either as completely accurate. Both from reasonably competent shops.
-
Doing a reasonability check on a mechanics quote for the following:
Remove exhaust from resonator back
Remove driveshaft
Replace guibo
Refresh rear seals on 4 speed (trans in car)
Replace driveshaft
Replace exhaust.
(Driveshaft u-joints replaced, center bearing replaced, balanced - all done by a different shop so don't need the time for this)
Just wonder how many hours I should consider reasonable to complete this work. Thanks for any input.

Anybody out there have one of these for sale?

When I bought my car my dip switch was bad and had to be replaced to make the headlights work.

...or we can choose to not purchase...

Full disclosure with caveat comment that I always like to receive what I pay for.
I had a semi-long conversation with Bryce today and was refunded for the order and offered a freebie.
That said, we as an enthusiast community have put him in between a rock and a hard place. We want parts, he is getting them, it takes a LONG time and much effort on his part. There are multiple steps required to service each one of our requests and the communication of said requests, volume and logistics involved currently does not support our want, need and desire for swift completion of orders. I don't know what the answer is but feel if we backed off, jointly tried to come up with a method of ordering from him that satisfied a majority of the community while allowing the process changes needed to affect a more consistently pleasant experience we would all benefit. Not apologizing just thinking out loud.
Like I told Bryce, I'm a simple guy. I like my '02, I want the parts, I will pay for them, I want to receive them
-
Will do

Nice catch, back to looking for oil leak. Could be just a head gasket then. Thanks

Quick turn of events after I Sent her this:
Remind him all mechanicals required to safely drive the car (wheels and braking system including all lines, master cylinder etc, lights, tires, wheel bearings, steering, suspension bushings, cooling system) will need to be refurbished because it sat for 10 years. Additionally the engine will first need to be drained, refilled and whatever issues are found repaired prior to startup. Not to mention evaluating and repairing or replacing gearbox items and differential. That's part of why I considered it a project car."
Latest response:
"Ok we accept your offer of 2K "
