  1. I further add, the car is hardly perfect, nor is it being presented as new. It is like any other 2002 just as you've all experienced. I've replaced bits as they've gone bad. I've already disclosed it has it's share of dings and chips though looks great at 5 or even 4 feet. A discerning eye at 2 feet away can call out every flaw of course, and disclosed in the PPI. Looking closely at all the photo's on BaT does offer the opportunity to see most of the flaws, though it is as presented and has been preserved as well as I could by driving it mainly on Marin County back roads on cool and dry weekends free of most traffic and I've been fortunate to not ever be behind a gravel truck. It just looks great though, if I do say so myself. I've only seen full restorations in better condition for at least the last 10 years, if not longer.
  2. That is interesting. Both doors appear the same. There has to be a logical explanation, as nobody would paint just the interior of both doors. The paint on the exterior of the car has been measured on every panel and there is zero evidence of bondo, filler, or repainting. In full disclosure I do admit there is a spot or two of touch up paint applied - and I mean little spots. As for left rear bumper horn, the bumper is actually not attached in forward location in that picture, as the bolt, washer and nut securing this fell off and likely accounts for any tilt. They've since been found. There is definitely not any fill and redrill in that area.
  3. I have no idea, but I can tell you what I experienced So, let's use Steve's picture below for reference: I assume you can see both tags. The card with the green lettering seems glued to the seat, the tag that is attached to spring moves more freely, though I didn't try to remove it. I saw as pictured above on my driver and passenger seat bottoms. None of those had dates. Under my rear bench I found only the green card. I thought I could make out a 1971 date, but it was awfully garbled and a lot of bleeding from the seat made it less than desirable to declare I had evidence of the seat build date. I do have a photo, but it's unnecessary now. Then I chose to remove the passenger seat, as I was getting tired of trying to get to the tag on the spring. Once out of the car, I figured out it did not have a date and went for the seat back. After removing the screws I was able to get to the card and saw what I will show below:
  4. I was very fortunate to get some of Delia Wolfe's time in person today. I took the 2002 to her for her input on the originality of the paint and interior, and any other tidbits of wisdom I could take away. While I shy away from quoting Delia, nor attempting to make claims on her behalf, I walked away convinced I had her belief the paint was original - mind you not shy of any blemishes as I've already disclosed and would be happy to discuss in greater detail, though perhaps not today. Now about those seats.... Again, I am not going to speak for Delia, but I walked away disheartened and of the belief the interior could not have even been sold with the car, as the black hinges came out after the production date. Well, disheartened and prepared to share the news, I drove home my sherbie as the mother in law calls it, now determined to find a date to validate or dispel what I just heard. One of the mantra's I attempt to live by is Trust, but verify, so the passenger seat came out. Thank goodness I did. Passenger seat, under the rear cover, tag clearly stamped 1.4.71 - April fools day 1971. My mother's birthday, and the day I found out I was going to be a father to my wonderful daughter, April. Perhaps a mic drop is in order, but I feel relieved. I realize this doesn't dispel whether it was installed at the dealer or the factory, but at this point, it's period correct, every other receipt is basically accounted for, I want to call it as delivered to the original owner, and it very well could have come from the factory this way. Salt and pepper carpeting and all. I'll post the picture of the tag and the video of paint measurements to BaT shortly... Thank you all, especially Steve for assisting me in getting over this latest hub.
  5. So, I will be going to post this on BaT shortly, but this is what I've been able to determine thus far: I ran a paint depth meter on multiple locations across every panel on the entire car. Everything had a 1.5 to 3.0 reading. This should satisfy the original paint doubters. To be clear, I don't have any issue with anyone calling me out to prove anything that concerns them about statements I am making. The statements should be accurate and truthful. I was able to locate the cards on the driver seat, both under the seat bottom and behind the seat back. Neither appear to have dates, though I have not removed them from the seat as I was concerned about tearing, they appear to be either glued in or have become one with the seat I found a card in similar condition under the back seat, did not attempt to remove the rear seat back. I also found a tag behind the seat back on the passenger seat, though am taking a break before continuing my search. I assume there is one under the seat bottom am hoping I can find a date somewhere. I am going to stick with this is the interior as delivered to the original owner, perhaps as shipped from the factory. The original owner was 50ish when the car was purchased, and he died at around 78. I can't imagine this owner doing an interior swap. I reached out to Peter Pan only this week, though as assumed they have no records that far back. There was a second owner for three months, though here to, I have very little evidence to doubt they did anything to the interior during their 3 months of ownership. I am not done digging into this. I'll be posting any and all evidence for statements above including the paint measurements later today.
  6. Steve, This is awesome and you are not a troublemaker, more a trouble deterrent ! Thank you!!!! I now have something to do Saturday that will help shed some light on this. With this thought, does anyone know if the door cards have similar markings or cards (I am dreading a yes answer and the thought of pulling on them. How about the back seat? I guess I can figure out the back seat easy enough. I hope I didn't remove the parts cards at some point over the years in cleaning or putting on the seat covers. I have never removed the seats myself, though the driver was removed only recently to repair the hinge. Thank you again.
  7. Thank you. I don't think anyone here has been offensive or harmful. I appreciate and value the opinion and input of others to help me shape the choices I make.
  8. Hi Everyone, I am the seller of this 2002. First, I appreciate everyone's thoughts and inputs. First, as to the originality. I maintain the car is maintained and preserved, not 100% original, nor do I attempt to make this claim. I do though state the paint is original ,and the interior is mainly original, not 100%. As mentioned in the ad, the driver seat was recently repaired after locating a replacement inner hinge, bulbs have been replaced, shift knob, steering wheel and stereo and even some of the washers and screws in the glovebox have been replaced. As for the originality of the salt and pepper / saddle brown combination of the interior. This is and always has been up for debate, and only yesterday Delia questioned me on whether the hinges should be chrome on a 2002 with an 05/71 production date. The Hoffman invoice only states skai leatherette, the dealer invoice makes no reference to options, and I have no receipts to think this was swapped otherwise. I continue to try to find some validation of truth in either direction, but have no reason to believe, other than the skepticism of others, that this is not the interior that was delivered at purchase. Read into that however you choose. I swapped the driver mirror for the one shown, and added the passenger mirror. I like the symmetry from the front of both mirrors, and the additional safety features of the passenger mirror. The original mirror is in a box of parts I believe. I have no regrets for this change. As for the wheels...I am curious, what wheels I should have on the car. I am a casual enthusiast, no expert, and everything done to the car in my ownership is based on what I wanted to do with it, while attempting to not butcher it in the process. I'll close by saying, when I purchased this car nearly 20 years ago now, I knew exactly what I was going to do with it. My plan was to maintain and lightly modify it and try to keep it to less than 100K miles 20 years later, and fully enjoying driving it 2K miles each year.
  9. I seldom if rarely participate in the forum or events, though I have met and interacted with a lot of you over the years in one way or another. So hopefully I won't get flamed for posting here, but didn't know where else to post. The car is up for auction and the price posted I felt could not set, as it is an auction... Anyway, I've decided to auction my 2002 on Bring a Trailer. I hope all you bimmerheads enjoy the auction. http://bringatrailer.com/listing/1971-bmw-2002-15/
