  1. OK, I will bring this to a close. Original diagnosis was correct - blown slave cylinder seal. Error I made - when I installed the slave cylinder, I did not line up the push rod with the indent on the clutch fork. The result was a broken seal as soon as I tried to engage the clutch with a push rod not engaging the fork and breaking itself at the odd angle. All fixed - another slave cylinder installed correctly and a bleed. Happy now. I have installed quite a few slave cylinders over the years, in many different cars and I never knew you could "miss" the clutch fork. Most of those were not encased inside the bell housing, but still wasn't aware. Old dogs, new tricks... Thanks very much for all the assists and thoughts. It always seemed so simple, and in the end it was. Shout out to the Motive pressure bleeder. I used it overtime on this one and it really made it a simple one person job.
  2. The good news is that I now have the exact right combination of socket extensions and u-joints to easily get to both bolts. 1 - 8 inch extender, 1 - u-joint, and a second 8 inch extender, then the 13mm socket. Perfect.
  3. Yes, I am sure it is not tranny fluid or oil. It is new brake fluid, and the reservoir is going down as I pump the clutch. I will remove the slave again and make sure it goes in straight. This is a 5 speed Getrag 245, so there is no way for me to look inside unless I drop the tranny. It is all inside the bell housing. Not exactly sure how to make sure the push rod fits into the "detent" on the internal clutch fork. I guess I incorrectly assumed it would end up in the right place as long as I mounted the slave in the hole. TBD.
  4. When I mounted the slave cylinder, I could not see or feel any depression inside the bell housing where the slave cylinder shaft would insert. Did I miss something inside the bell housing that could cause the shaft to not be aligned properly and leak like this?
  5. Well... I'm not sure where to go from here. I replaced the master cylinder and slave cylinder and installed a new braided hard line between the two. I bled the system with a Motive power bleeder and it ran clear without bubbles. The slave cylinder was the correct one for the Getrag 245 5-speed I have. The master is a replacement of the original one I took off. It still has a massive leak at the front of the bell housing when I press the clutch pedal!! And it ill not go into gear. In the picture, I am pointing to where most of the fluid comes out. There is also a bit of fluid leaking between the slave cylinder and bell housing mounting flange. Did I install a defective slave cylinder? What else could this be? TIA for any additional help on this.
  6. Not sure. I havn't tried yet. I am curious to hear other ideas if it is that hard to access. I have many adapters and thin walled sockets. Maybe a crow foot wrench on a socket extension?
  7. Seems odd that it faces down, but I did notice that earlier and saw a few posts. Thanks for reminding me. Final question as I order parts - Does the hydraulic hose that connects the slave cylinder from a getrag 245 mount right up to the regular 2002tii master cylinder? I did not see any threads that highlighted an issue with this, but thought I would ask to make sure it will screw right in.
  8. That feels exactly right. I was not sure if there was a way for the fluid to get into the bell housing and leak out the front. I have never worked on getrag 245s before. Time to replace the slave and master while I'm at it. It has been over 10 years! Thanks for the expertise.
  9. I need some help with diagnosis. The symptoms are that the clutch will not engage or disengage while the engine is running. I found out when I tried to start my '74 tii with Getrag 245 5-speed. It jerked forward with the clutch depressed when I tried to start it (should have taken it out of gear to start). I've had the car for 10+ years with almost no issues and drive it regularly. Current History: I have been driving it recently with no issues and nothing on the floor. I have not done any work on the car recently. Brake light came on the day before, so I added a small amount of DOT4. Next day, the clutch would not engage or disengage as described above. Noticed dark fluid on floor beneath car. Smells like brake fluid, is very dark and below the front of tranny. Tranny has new MTL from last spring. I have not checked that level. Brake/clutch reservoir was empty to the clutch nipple. Brakes work fine. Upon close inspection, master cylinder is dry all around, nothing on booster or inside peddle box. Booster is dry inside. Slave cylinder is dry all around. Hydraulic soft line is also dry. Upon pumping clutch, fluid drips freely from the front of the transmission. Not near the master or slave cylinders. It appears to be coming from the top side, as there is a small amount of fluid that runs down the side of the tranny as well. I'm not sure where this could be coming from. I can easily replace the master, slave and hydraulic hose, but I'm not convinced that will solve the problem. It has to be coming from the clutch circuit, but where do I look?   10. And the winner is - VWJake! Thanks for the responses. The pieces are the end caps for the exterior chrome trim strips on the passenger door. I must have gotten new ones when I replaced these years ago. I guess they fell out of the glove box when I removed it, although I thought the box was mostly empty. Thanks for the help.

  13. I was refurbishing my heater box and removed most of the under dash pieces, including the glove box. I was left with the following identical parts on the interior carpet. I can not figure out where they go. Anybody have a clue?

  15. Vote #2 for a loose reverse light switch connection on the tranny tunnel. That was mine.
  16. Can anyone help me ID the valve on the top, drivers side of my 5-speed overdrive transmission? Obviously, I know little about this transmission, and these are not my pictures (thanks to whomever posted these pics), but the red circles are the part I can not identify. What is this? On my installed and functioning tranny, this piece is loose and simply lifts out. Is this correct or is this a problem?
  17. When I finished reading my signed copy, I made my wife read the first few chapters, then gave it to my 16 year old son for a read. Great book. So much truth and goodness in there. Now, back to the garage to work on BMWs and LandCuisers!

  20. I also have owned. and currently own several old land cruisers since the early 1980s. I love ih8mud.com ! The TLC community is pretty remarkable. This one is too! Also the austin healey groups are very helpful and knowledgeable, but not nearly as much information as this 02 crowd.
  21. Just finished reading the book over the last week. IMO, certainly worth the price and more! Lots of great information about the changes from one model to the next and variations across the globe. It is not a guide to restoration but, as previously described, a guide to the models, options, differences, etc.. Photos are very helpful and the history is excellent. Certainly should be in every well stocked 02 library.
  22. When I registered mine last month, I got a reply email. Then I had to confirm from a link in that email, I think. It all worked, but after I registered I only get error messages when I try to see the 1973 and 1974 cars. The 1972 and earlier database links are working for me, but I get errors from 1973 and 1974.
