  1. So I have been working on other things in my life so I put my 2002 rebuild on hold for a while. well it seems like a lot of the old pages I had bookmarked here no longer exist. So here is what I am looking for: torque specs for the m10 engine. I need basically everything as the entire engine is disassembled. Can anyone link me to a page or database where this info is so I don't have to go digging through random threads on the forums? I have found separate threads for things like head bolts but it would be nice to have all the information in one place, especially since some of the info I'm finding seems to be contradictory. It's a '76 but the engine is from a '74 (e12 head I believe). I've got Chilton and Haynes manuals buy they aren't super helpful. any help is much appreciated
  2. I am just starting a rebuild of my m10 engine and was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of a good machinist in the Portland area to help with the rebuild. I plan to have the head ported and have the block bored a bit. Thanks for any input
  3. I am fairly new to 2002s, I have a '76 that I bought about a month ago and it hasn't run since I bought it so forgive me if I am asking stupid questions. The car died on me when I was driving it home from buying it. I found that the problem was with the distributor points so I replaced the points with pertronix. The car still will not start, however, I at least know I am getting spark because when I try to start it it backfires and flames shoot up from the carb. Could this be due to very bad timing and premature ignition of air/fuel? That's about the only explanation I could think of, any ideas/advice for dealing with this problem would be greatly appreciated!
  4. Thanks for all the advice. I'll try gapping the distributor, and will probably replace the ignition coil this weekend. Hopefully that will get her running at least for the moment. I'll put up some pics somewhere once I get all this sorted out. Aesthetically its in great condition!
  5. Hi I am new to this forum, 2002s and European cars. I have been wanting a BMW for quite a while and after test driving several and talking to friends who owned them I decided a 2002 was for me. Last weekend I drove about four hours to buy one that seemed like a good buy. The car has 157,000 miles on it, with a new motor with 72,000 miles on it. The woman selling it was the second owner and had records since 1988 including the receipt for the engine swap. She had had over $2000 of work done in Feb. and the mechanic did a full tune up but had only been driven about 1100 miles between then and now, meaning it had sat for a while. The car ran great when I test drove it. On my way home, once I got on the highway and was going about 65-70 I noticed bluish smoke coming from the exhaust. When the car had its tune up the compression was spot on so at the time I guessed maybe a seal had gone bad when the car was sitting and was now just burning a bit of oil. When I was about an hour from my house the car cut completely, I was driving in fourth and lost all power. I pulled the car to the side of the highway and could not get it to start again. It was dark and I had only the tools that the car came with and am still not very familiar with these engines so I decided to just have it towed back to my house and deal with it there. I have as yet been unable to get it to start. Things I have tried: Starting fluid in the carb; no dice, cleaning the ignition points in the distributor, new spark plugs (one of my plugs had oil on it when I pulled it out so I'm starting to worry a bit more that it might be a problem with my piston rings) I know the fuel pump is working because there is fuel going through the lines and into the filters. I don't think its the carb since it had been rebuilt when the car was worked on and looks fine, maybe though. Tomorrow morning I am going to check and make sure that I have spark. I will do a compression test once I can get the car to start to check on the oil leaking problem. If I find that I am getting spark then I'm pretty much out of ideas, towing the car to a mechanic is my last resort so I thought I would ask people on here who are familiar with the cars for ideas of solutions. TLDR: My 2002 is broken down and I cannot get it to start. I have tried new plugs, starting fluid, know the fuel pump works, and don't think its my carb. I know I have an oil leak problem since there was oil in my spark plugs/burning when the car did run. If you have any ideas for diagnoses/solutions to my problem I would greatly appreciate it! (sorry if I am posting this in the wrong area, I am not familiar with the structure of this forum yet).
