  2. Hey group, I am in Bethesda and am looking for a new mechanic for my 68 1600. My 1600 sat for several weeks and I am not getting any fuel to the carb although I can hear the fuel pump humming as I turn the key 3/4 so I figure I've got a blockage or crud in the tank that is preventing the fuel delivery. I have been a loyal customer of a well known independent in Rockville for my newer BMW but had a significant do-over on my 1600 and I don't think I want to take it back there. Any suggestions for a good and reasonable $$ mechanic in my area? Thanks.

  4. Will the front sway bar and brackets from a 74 2002 fit my 68 1600 without modification?
  5. Without the benefit of anti roll bars (as in the 2002) my 68 1600 rolls quite a bit in the corners. Are there any 1600 (or 2002) owners out there that can share experience of how strut bars enhance the driving experience? Is it overkill for a street car? Since I have a stock air cleaner, none of the straight bars will work. Elefant makes a set for front and rear which I am considering. All comments welcome. P.S. I read the thread from a year ago about the TEP strut bars. Thanks. Chris
  6. Anyone using synthetic brake fluid or sticking with DOT 3 or 4?
  7. Hey group, where can I source front upper and lower timing case covers for my 68 1600? Got oil leaks.
  8. Yes, I have been a customer of Radial Tire for 25+ years.
  9. i have standard brakes. I did not check for clearance before sending out the wheels for refinishing because the issue of stick on weights did not come to mind until now and the wheels are elsewhere; hence my inquiry to the forum. My concern here is based on having early 1990s 124 series MB sedans with 8 hole alloys which had had 'pinky' tight fitting of the wheel around the calipers. Stick on weights were not an option in that application.
  10. I am having my 13x4.5 inch steelies from my 68 1600 refinished and wanted to know if stick on wheel weights were an option in lieu of the standard hammer on wheel lip weights. Will there be a clearance issue with the front calipers?
  11. c.d. Interesting comment..... I thought this forum was here to help, not to judge.
  12. Thanks c.d. I thought thiose tapered ones were not appropriate. Where can I source the correct ones? used or new?
  13. I just removed my wheels to have them refinished and found that the PO had two different kinds of lug nuts on the car. One set cone shaped and 3 sets were plain (flat base). Which one is the correct for the steelies?
  14. Thanks for the tip dave. I called Max and he can do the job.
  15. I've gotten some great advice on this forum about proper color for my 68 1600 steelies. As I don't have the time or equipment, can anybody in the DC metro area recommend a shop that can strip, blast, and paint my steelies in the OEM paint color for a reasonable cost? I have gotten a quote from one independent shop for $200-$400 per wheel depending on condition/rust. Seems a bit steep.
  16. Removing my 4 tires/wheels to have steelies refinished/resprayed. I understand that the floor jack should be placed on inner subframes for lifting, but where should 4 jack stands be placed to hold car? If it makes any difference, I have two floor jacks and can simultaneously lift one end of car at same time.
  17. Thanks for all the suggestions, now if I could only find some NOS or decent used hub caps, I'd be fine. Might be interested in those 69 wheels in your basement as well. Chris
  18. Thanks. You both describe paints that seems to have different finishes. Are the wheels supposed to have a 'flat' or matte' finish or glossy, shiney, or 'polished' appearance?
  19. Thanks Bob. The reason I ask is that I just came into possession of a 68 1600 and all the rims, including the spare steel wheel are painted the body color--Chamonix. They appear to be original as they require reconditioning/respraying. I was trying to find some original brochures to see what the authentic color should be. Not questioning your knowledge, but could the 1600s have had body color and the 2002s silver? Chris
  20. Were the 13x4.5 steelies (that came with hub caps/wheel covers)on the 1968+ 1600s and 2002s painted the same color as the body from the factory? If not what was the OEM wheel color?
  21. Just took delivery of 68 1600 with ti pistons and modern a/c Battery was dead from 6 day cross country trip and will not take a charge. It is a Group 42 Autolite with 500CCA. Having had some experience with old 356's are there any 'period' batteries available ? If not, what is next best battery? With A/C max CCA is desired.
  22. To John S, Thanks for the tip. I was concerned about excessive wear on wheel bearings with those E21 wheels from bavauto with an ET of 18. Is that the issue or potential rubbing on the fender with 185/70s? I am looking at minilites from England and they can make the 13x5.5 with any offset I want. They make their 13x6s at 25mm offset.
  23. Bavauto.com has two OE 13 x 5.5 wheels for sale on their website. One steel, the other an alloy (Style . Sales rep says the ET is 18 for both. Does that seem correct? an 11 mm difference in off set between a 5 and 5.5 inch wheel?
  24. Thanks. What is the ET on the 13x5 alloy on the tii?
