  1. Today when I started up Elise, everything was normal. Then, after driving for about 20 minutes, I heard what I thought was a rock in the wheelwhell. Shortly after that, I started hearing a high pitched whine. Sort of like the sound bad plugs make over a cheap car stereo. Increasing with RPMs and slowing, too. But I don't have a radio. I made some stops, and picked up some Mardi Gras beads (not relevant), and then heard what sounded like a bad valve tick. Turns out that the nut on the back of the top alternator bolt came loose, and the belt first began to rub on the bolt (sound 1). Then as the bolt backed out farther it began to rub against the fan (sound 2). 5 min and a drop of locktite later, all is better.
  2. +1 on that nasty stuff black goo under the windshield. I encountered it on my '74, too.
  3. If you can make the time the Monterey/Carmel/Big Sur Area. I grew up around there, and still make it back every year or so to visit the in-laws in Salinas, where I keep a '70 Spitfire. I wish I could make your get-to-gether!
  4. I love that feeling - there's no reason not to drive these cars daily!
  5. how 'bout a few photos then. I'd love to see the monster you are trying to tame.
  6. I'm new to the '02, as well as this forum, but I've got tons of experience working on British cars, and the Lucas (prince of darkness) electrical systems. Did the circuit work before? What did you change? What were you working on? 99% of the time it's a "duh" moment when you find out the problem.
  7. Welcome! Let me know when you get to Austin. As for rental cars, they are all about the same.
  8. Thanks John_in_VA. I followed the link, pulled the switch, bent the little tab oh so little, and presto! Good as new.
  9. Tonight for the first time I got to work on the car past dark in preparation for getting it to pass inspection. It hasn't been registered for about 5 years. Running through the checklist, I got all the turn signals to work after changing a couple of bulbs. Got an issue with the marker lamps and license plate lights sorted out thanks to 02for2, BillWilliams, and TonyHavana. When I was all done checking everything over, it was just getting dark, and I climbed inside to back the car into the garage, when I saw this glowing red light under the dash, on the side of the center console. So I did what any guy would do. I pressed it! Hazards! And they all were working. But then when I went to push the switch again, they would't go off. As best I can determine, I have the push on - push off type of illuminated button. Are these repairable? or do I just try to replace it.
  10. Problem solved. Fuse #7 (or 6) was loose, and had bad contacts. Cleaned it up, and am now ready for inspection. Thanks all.
  11. nice kicks. Now you can run faster, farther, and even jump higher!
  12. curious because all 4 are out, as well as the license plate lamps...
  13. Since I'm now done with the "Tool" I'll gladly send it to you as I don't have any need for it now. All I ask is you send it back when you are done. PM me if interested.
  14. Howdy everyone - just bought my first '02 - a 1974 in Sahara that is 100% original. I'm the 2nd owner! The car hasn't been driven since 06 - at least that's the last time it was registered. Since it runs OK, and most of the mechanics work, I figured I'd try to get it to pass inspection. The only thing that isn't are the rear license plate lamps and marker lights. According to the decal under the hood they are on the same circuit as the horn (which works). Since my Manual is still on order from Amazon, and I don't have a wiring diagram, I thought I'd ask here. Are all the bulbs wired in series? So when one goes out the all go dark? That's how it looks to me from just poking around. But I thought I'd ask first.
  15. I've just picked up my first 2002, a 1974, and it looks like all the original stickers are present. If you want pics, let me know and I'll take some.
  16. I just bought a 76 2002. So I'm at the hardware store looking for the necessary tools to do a basic tune up, and I get to the socket aisle, and start to look for a plug socket. Of course there are 5 sizes, and I've got no idea which one is needed. So I break out my iPhone, and google the question. Result #1 is a post on this forum. 13/16. Thanks guys!
  17. I just put the new trim on a 76 windshield today. It was a two day process. Day 1 was spent putting the rubber on the windshield, and then installing that whole thing in the opening. That took about 15 minutes total. Then I spent 2 hours trying to get the bright trim into the groove. I gave up in frustration! Although There are some helpful videos on Youtube outlining the process, but that didn't help me. I broke down and bought this tool from Amazon: Lisle 47000 Windshield Locking Strip Tool After waiting a couple of days for it to arrive, I was able to finish the job in about 20 more minutes. The biggest secret is to submerge the trim in a bucket of super hot water to make it very flexible, and to use lots of windex as a lubricant to help it slide in. Overall it's a pretty easy job.
