  1. Thanks so much for the encouragement. It's a bittersweet event to sell this car. Buying my first house but selling my first car. I'm sure she'll end up in good hands though.
  2. Pictures can be found in this thread from 1 year ago when I first bought the car. I'm selling because my wife and I are moving to a new home where parking is an issue (and she said it's time to go...). The car for sale is a 1974 Chamonix (white) BMW 2002 with blue interior. This car is in excellent condition with very little rust (none visible, no paint bubbles), and it just ticked over 104K on the odometer. I have work/restoration records from the previous owner and myself. The car has a salvaged title from a rear-end back in 2001; however, the car then went through a $15,000 restoration with new paint, bumpers, seats, seat belts, dash, stereo, etc. I think you will be satisfied that the car has been maintained well. The heater fan is non-operational (car comes with used replacement heater fan). The heater box radiator and valve work great. Title in hand and ready to be sold. Upgrades and extras: 32/36 Weber Carburetor Billstein "Heavy Duty" shocks and struts (lower ride height while still being comfortable) Nakamichi stereo, Audison power amplifier, Focal speakers front and back (installed by Sound Innovations, Hayward) Clifford Alarm system with door, hood, and trunk sensors (non-operational currently) Webasto sunroof installed and in great condition Hella rear window brake light and tail lights refurbished (no more rear ends!) Hella fog lamps HID headlights Momo Sport steering wheel Trunk refurbishment with carpeted panels to match interior 14 inch bottlecap wheels Recent service: Radiator re-cored, fan replaced, water pump replaced (Berkeley Motor Works) Alternator replaced (Bavarian Professionals) Brake caliper replaced (Moran Motosport) Rust repair on passenger-side floorboard and trunk (Autosports Exclusive) Turn signal stalk replaced Price is $6,500 or best offer. Please contact me by email to set up a meeting.
  3. The car could be the color "Colorado". It's more of a pastel orange than the true orange of Inka.
  4. I don't have a Malaga, but I do have a Chamonix 1974 2002 that is in great shape with good paint and interior and very little rust. If you're interested, send me an email. I'm in Castro Valley, CA as well. mitchjunk@hotmail.com
  5. I will preempt this story by saying that I truly don't work on my car like most of you. I'm learning slowly as things pop up, and before he passed away, was being trained by Mr. Ingraham. Now it's just me and the FAQ, but I think I'm doing quite well for myself! A few weeks back, I started noticing a pool of coolant below the car after parking overnight. It was coming from the front near the radiator, and as far as I could tell, I thought it might be a hose warping with the change in temperature (it's gotten much cooler over the past month here in the Bay Area). But I suspected that my problem was not really a hose and was something much more sinister. I started pouring through the FAQ each night for a week trying to figure out where coolant might be leaking. I eventually narrowed it down to the thermostat and the water pump, found pictures of each, went and found them on my car. I cleaned things up around each area, fired up the car to warm it up, then turned it off and waited. Bingo. Weep hole on the water pump. I got Berkeley Motor Works to do the heavy lifting, and I saved my car from further damage. Thanks FAQers! One day, I'll be doing all my own work once we move to a house (living in an apartment now), but until then, I'll learn and be vigilant!
  6. While at work, I left my lights on and my battery went dead. I proceeded to get a jump from a friend, and without checking, he connected the cables to the wrong posts. I noticed a wisp of smoke and yelled, "NOOOO!" Now my speakers don't work. The stereo works, but I have an Audiovox amplifier connected in between the battery and stereo. This does not seem to be getting power. I think a hidden fuse or circuit breaker (?) might be the culprit. A short section of the amplifier's power wire goes from the positive battery post to a small square block (http://www.surplus-electronics-sales.com/Zencart/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=6&products_id=86) and then continues on into the passenger cabin where the amplifier is located. Could this circuit breaker have been tripped when the car was incorrectly "jumped"? Should I just buy another one and see if that fixes it, or is it more likely that the amplifier has just been burned out? Thanks in advance for your help.
  7. This thread is probably dead by now, but I thought for posterity's sake, I would give my two cents. Feel free to message me if you need any dimensions or further info. I purchased a '74 2002 with a Webasto already installed. I don't know who did the installation, but it was done very well. I'm sure it was expensive. There are just a few small leaks when it rains, but this can be lessened by keeping the windows and vents closed. The water can't come in if the air can't get out. Otherwise, I'm very happy with it, and there is no sign of warping, rotting, or rusting.
  8. Greetings all, I've recently been in need of a some help when it comes to mechanical and electrical issues. And while I would love to just pay someone to do it for me, that's not how I want to spend my money. It would be great to find a mentor in the SF Bay Area who could show me the ropes on some of the common repair issues of 2002 ownership. Current issues that I'm interested in tackling: Installation of a kill switch Cleaning carburetor Replacing brake pads Heater box refurbishment, heater fan replacement
  9. I attempted to pull apart the signal to get to the innards, but after fudging with it, I felt like I was just going to break it. Between the metal clips and mushroom pins to keep things together, I knew things would not end well. Ended up buying a replacement from Mr. Sherman Martinez. Thanks Sherman!
  10. Thanks so much to everyone! Those descriptions were excellent, and hopefully this weekend I'll get at it with a vengeance. I'll post up pictures of my progress.
  11. So it's not possible to open the unit up and refurbish it? Since this car has a lot of original pieces, I'd rather keep the one I have and make it work.
  12. On my '74 2002, I have a problem developing with my turn signal stalk. In the "low beam" position, if I don't pull the stalk slightly towards me, the high beams are accidentally activated. And going over small bumps and things will cause the stalk to wobble and flash the high beams like a high school rave party. I removed the stalk, and I could not find an obvious was to open the thing without breaking it. I'm sure I just need to tighten something or clean a connection inside of it, and I'd rather do that before shelling out $100 for a replacement. Keeping my fingers crossed that this hasn't been beaten to death in another post...
  13. I recently had a similar problem. The car had not been registered since 2003, but I made the previous owner pay those fees. It seems that you're stuck now that you've owned the car for 2 years. Be careful about selling the car to someone out of state and buying it back or whatever you plan to do. There can be some tax consequences for that kind of maneuver. BUT as another poster just said, a DMV employee can make those late fees and penalties go away with a few clicks.
  14. Are there people in the Bay Area that might be able to bring an old heater fan back to life? It still spins but sounds terrible when it's on. Bad bearings, perhaps. As others have said, I'd rather not shell out several hundred for a new one.
  15. Bristow, could you enlighten me on the wiring set up of your current kill switch? Location, etc. I'd like to do something similar but I haven't found instructions through the forum search engine. Thanks!
  16. I'm curious if you used a chemical rust treatment before you repainted the trunk. Nice job, by the way.
  17. They still have plenty of BMWs, but they all bought new ones.
  18. I can't say whether your moto is allowed, but you'd at least have me crowding around it!
  19. Signed up and ready to go! See you all soon.
  20. I have a quick word of warning about the ATF-Acetone mixture. Hexane/Acetone mixtures were pretty common as degreasers in recent history, but were phased out because of neurological problems caused by the metabolism of hexane. Hexane can't get into your body efficiently, but when it's dissolved in acetone, it passes through your skin much more easily. Therefore, you could potentially be increasing your risk to whatever is in ATF. Please use some protection when working with this stuff! http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm5045a3.htm (I just finished getting my PhD in chemistry and helped out with the green chemistry classes. A lot of toxicology info was given to us and I'm glad I can pass it along to people outside of the chemical world!)
  21. Aw, I got excited that it might be me, but I've got a Chamonix '74 and I was heading out to Livermore in the other direction. Ah well, maybe one day someone will say hey as I drive by.
  22. Could you say more about this video? Are there youtube video explanations of 2002 maintenance stuff? That would be a terrific help! Congrats on the windshield replacement, by the way!
  23. I might be interested in the spare tire well. This area of the car did not vary year to year, correct? I have a '74 with a small rust hole in the tire well to repair at some point. And potentially more small holes as I clean this area out.
