  1. anyone have any further thoughts about possible visible flaws or price? be very helpful to get a few :-)
  2. well, okay, thanks, but ... what flaws do you see? anything that i could use to negotiate with? and if 10k might be low -- what might be ok and what might be high? update: haggerty's offers this for the 2002: excellent: 18,800 good: 10,700 fair: 7,400 autotrans: - 25% if excellent is concourse, then my potential 2002 is between g and ex, or 14,750. now, take away 25% for auto trans, and you get $11,062. not that i think he'll let it go for that, but does that sound about right for this particular car?
  3. also, as to the miles, judging from the looks of the stickers, i'd say 68k miles might be right. i mean, the stickers look pristine to me, for what that's worth. uhm. could the paint, in fact, be original? sheesh. how insane would that be, especially in as intact as it seems to me. could not find a single bubble or funky looking area. then again, the original owner could have had it done at some point. if the price is right, i'll be able to talk to him and see what's what.
  4. ha! yup. far outside of ca. here's a few more shots. even though i didn't take the spare out, in the close up shots you can sorta tell it looks clean.
  5. or maybe i should ask him now what it's going to take and if he names an astronomical number, then i can back away and not go through the minor hassle of driving to his place, taking pix and all that. so: before seeing or after? i just wish he'd named a price in the first place.
  6. Mark: thanks for the price advice and the negotiating advice. according to the owner, it's 70K original miles. i guess what i'll go do is have a look at it, take some pictures, post them here, see what ya'll say, then email him and ask him what you said, what'll it take for you to let it go. if it's close, okay. if we agree on a price, i'll then take it somewhere other than his repair shop for an independent PPI. but ... what do i do if he's adamant about me naming a price first? he seems like a very nice guy, so we'll see.
  7. well, i did find this, but i obviously need more ...
  8. yes, yes, i know, you need pictures. and i will try to get some. but in the meantime ... it's a '76 automatic, 70k miles on it. and let's assume it's in stellar condition. i saw it and it's sparkling. new rebuilt engine. no rust. always kept inside. the owner also owns and runs a pretty high end european auto repair place, so although it looks like he's put a crapton of money into the car, it's not like he paid retail. how i came across the vehicle, i just saw him driving it around and asked if it was for sale. he said he hadn't been thinking of selling it but that money talks ... i assume by that he means a/ he's not going to name a price and b/ he's going to want a lot (as who wouldn't?). i don't need the car. it's not my dream year. but even so and nonetheless. i gather that autos are worth less than manuals, and i'd rather drive a manual, but i have a disease that's weakened my legs to the point that i can no longer drive a stick. they've been that way since i last owned a 2002, about 10 years ago. i loved the car, but i could no longer drive it. and then this thing comes along ..... anyway, what'd you imagine the top-end range for a 2002 like this one might be. and if i decide to go drive it, i will take pix and post them then. thanks!!!! and no i wouldn't be buying to flip it. flipper is my screen name 'cause of the old tv show, that's all.
  9. thanks! i traded in my 02 on a 1976 Porsche 912e and she hasn't forgiven me yet. she likes 02s sooo much better and makes a habit of pointing them out to me anytime she sees one. i love her anyway!
  10. yesterday my girlfriend and i were strolling along the new cool High Line park in nyc's meatpacking district when we passed a four-story open-air parking mechanism and she said, 'look! a 2002!' and she was right, there it was, top floor, in the distance. sweet car, sweet racks, sweet surfboard on the racks. does it belong to anyone here? if not, it's gotta be waldo's!
  11. thanks, esty, i have the trim but not the clips to hold the trim on. for some unfathomable reason they're not the standard clips. how i found out is, i was about the buy some from BLUNT, but when we exchanged pictures of the way my holes are, he said he'd never seen anything like it and that his clips wouldn't work. you're right about the fogged look. the rest of my trim certainly has that. i wonder if there's a way to fog the autozone stuff?
  12. while this is back up top ... i wonder how this would look mixed with the real thing. i'm missing belt line trim on my driver's door and nowhere else.
  13. Love it! Meanwhile, I'll gladly settle for what I've been looking for without luck for the past six months -- a 76 912E to go along with my 76 02, for a nice matching-years effect!
  14. ditto that. took the 76 out on the road this evening and she rocked. no hesitation whatsoever. in fact, she's never been so vroom vroom speedy. thanks again!
  15. scott: thanks for the encouragement and pix. very helpful! and now i gotta say, you guys are great. it was indeed a bushing problem. Baikal.2002, without you especially, i *never* would have sorted this out. what happened was, the bushing had slipped out of place and caused binding such that i was only getting *half* of the full range of motion. everything was moving as one, forcing the secondary flap to open all the way while the primary flap opened only partially. i took the linkage apart, cleaned things up a little, slipped the bushing into the hole (no problems!), reattached everything, and voila, full range of motion, primary and secondary doing their things as advertised! next job: see if that solves the hesitation problem. my fingers are crossed. again, thanks guys. this sleuthing has been incredibly rewarding! see pix and youtube vids of before and after linkage movement. before vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wGpHBrn3L4 after vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWY8fRrAfJM
  16. i hope that's it, and i'll have a closer look at it tomorrow. but from my take on the schematic (see below), that's a washer just as it should be, and then there's a thicker thing, the bushing, behind the lever, which isn't in the photo and which i'll check out tomorrow. damn but this is simple but complicated, both at the same time, and a real conundrum wrapped in a sphincter all at once. kinda fun to puzzle around, though ... much much thanks for your help.
  17. I think we've got a winner! I went over everything with my buddy and confirmed that things are ass backwards. One thing I noticed is that when I press the throttle all the way down, it hits a dead end before it can open the primary fully. do you have a guess as to how much higher it should be on the vertical rod? as to the bushing on the secondary lever, is there any way you could post a picture of that area and point to the bushing with an arrow or some such? hopefully that'll indicate to knuckledragger me what area of the level i should tap, as well. thanks once more ... edit: disconnected the vertical rod and plunged the throttle without it, and still it stops before the primary flap can open completely. i tried to see what the blockage is but i can't puzzle it out. any thoughts?
  18. here are some pix of the linkage, both toward the firefall and toward the carb itself. hope it shows something revealing! will study your picture and get back on it ...
  19. i have no such person to help me but i do have a long-distance pal with a weber in his 02 and we're going to do a phone consult this evening, both of us standing over our weber carbs as we do it. hopefully, that'll tell me something. meanwhile, here is the schematic of my carb: http://www.webercarbsdirect.com/v/vspfiles/weber_carburetor_schematics/3236DGAVEV.pdf if i'm reading that right, then the primary flap is indeed on the side toward the choke. but as you can kind of plainly see in the last three pictures in my 2nd post, the flap on the left barrel is wide open (this one is farthest from the choke) while the flap on the right barrel (closest to the choke) is only partially open. (The individual close ups are cropped from the both-barrel picture directly above them.) of course, i could be in the middle of a great big brain fart and this is all a dream. then again ... thanks for your help!
  20. my carb is the DGEV and, according to its schematic, the primary plate *should* be closest to the engine and choke and *should* be the plate that is opening 100% from the start. on my car, however, it's the other plate that is opening 100% from the start. in other words, things are ass backwards. the gas is shooting into the correct barrel but the wrong barrel is opening first. if i'm right in this assessment, please don't tell me to fix it. instead, please tell me *how to* fix it. what do i need to change to reverse the firing order of the two plates? thanks!
