My 2 cents- I've had my '95 993 for about 6 years. Pic below- I updated the wheels to the '02/'03 lightweights, along with an H and R spring kit. Otherwise stock. It's a fantastic, amazing car which has capabilities beyond what my courage levels or the law allows. But I honestly have more fun driving my '74 '02, and definitely get more positive "thumbs-up" reactions in the '02. I can corner hard, brake hard, accelerate hard in the '02, and I'm not breaking any speed limits doing it. Not so in the 993. In fact, I'm probably going slower in my '02 than a guy driving a base-model Honda Civic! I'm definitely a DIY guy, and while I can repair just about anything on my '02, not so with the 993. That big motor crammed in the trunk isn't really DIY-friendly in my opinion. But then I'm not a German engineer, so what do I know?! It sure is fast and makes all the right mechanical vroom-vroom (a technical term) noises. I like the model year 2002+ 996, and for an everyday driver for the price of a new base-model Mustang, they seem like a pretty great deal if you find a good one and anticipate higher operating costs as your tradeoff, vs. said Mustang. Btw I also like the vroom-vroom noises Mustangs make, just sayin'.
