  1. Got it. I tried the screwdriver, but it wouldn't go. Finally I drilled it through the face and put a little screw in there. Works for now.
  2. I wonder if I drill a small hole in the cap, if I can slide a little nail or something in there to engage the inner portion?
  3. Well, yes, it's a locking gas cap. I do not have the key, never did. So you say that it has quietly slipped into locked mode, and it will just spin?
  4. I should add... the outer part is sliding around the inner part. It is not grabbing the inner section to remove it.
  5. My gas cap, it might be original, has BMW stamping on it. Anyway, I stopped to get gas on my way back from lunch. It won't come off! It seems to be in two parts, an inner metal part that probably does the real work of a gas cap and an outer metal part that is more decorative. I think. Any tips? I do have enough gas to get home.
  6. I was just in AutoZone at lunch, looking at cables. Then looking at the motorcycle batteries, the Duralast Gold line had all of the same exact part numbers as the Big Crank at batterymart. They even had the ETX16L that I've been looking at, looks identical, same price as online. I'm surprised at how small they are! Smaller than what they appear online, but if they do the job I'm going to give them a try. If you are looking for them, be sure to look in the motorcycle/ATV section.
  7. Hi all, I need a new battery. I'm thinking that eventually I will want to move the battery to the trunk or under the seat, so I want to get an AGM battery. One confusing thing about this is when I shop online (no luck shopping locally where I live...) many of these are listed as motorcycle batteries. ? But that's what the search turns up. I do see a Miata battery made by Marathon which seems to have the posts in the correct location for our cars. Anyway, for those of you who have made this switch, what did you go with? Thanks, Cliff
  8. Great, if you find the switch, email me at cliffwarren@yahoo.com
  9. Looking for a hazard flasher switch. Does a 1974 work in a 1975?
  10. Ah, too bad. The guy probably got a half dozen calls this morning, and doesnt know why!
  11. Not mine. This is about two hours from me. It's not too often we see these around here: http://eastidaho.craigslist.org/cto/2368786400.html Very little information is given, of course. One thing the car might have going for it is that we are in a mountain-desert location, and in Idaho we don't use salt... meaning there is a chance that it's not rusted out. (A small chance... lol.)
  12. When I took out the rear seat to clean it, I found lots of mice debris, and 87 cents. But, since someone gave me the car for free, my total cost is -0.87, or in fact the car has paid me! I bought a soda with the proceeds! ;-)
  13. Dumb question, but HOW should I lubricate the sunroof cables? Mine works perfectly, and I want to keep it that way! ;-) Thanks...
  14. cheaptoads, That would be fantastic! Thanks, I'll try to send you my info, maybe I can paypal something to you for shipping.
  15. My car has the wonderful black plastic side mirrors. But in the "box 'o stuff" I got with the car I have the original mirror in great condition! But, I do not have the brackets needed to put the mirrors on! Any ideas? Is there a source for this or do I need to fabricate my own? Uploaded with ImageShack.us
  16. I found my original mirrors, and they are in fantastic condition. But these mirrors have no holes for bolts... they need to be mounted on brackets. Brackets that I don't have.
  17. This reminds me, when I acquired my car it had those plastic mirrors. But the box of goods that came with the car has the original mirrors. I've been meaning to swap them back to original. Maybe I should dig into this tonight...
  18. I think I need to try one or two more holes. If that doesn't work, I'll need to go the replacement pipe route. Thanks...
  19. One other thing... once I get through the metal, either one sleeve or two, there is about a half-inch of air, and then another very hard object in the center. Once my drill bit hits this object it slides off and snaps. I wonder if it's a spring, and somehow my shocks are different?
  20. Well, after three holes and two broken drill bits, this is what I have: Uploaded with ImageShack.us No green goo, shock doesn't compress. This is a side shock, not the middle one. I'm stumped.
  21. OK, Yes now that I think about it, I'll need a hole in the big end anyway, because I'll need to insert something when the small end compresses into the big end, to keep it from moving in the future. Thanks
  22. OK, I must be ready for the remedial class. Here is my story: When I acquired the car, I got the bumpers but they were not installed. I've been wanting something, particularly for the rear because the back looks so unfinished with nothing there. I took out the middle shock. For the side shocks, I wanted to compress them so I followed the directions in threads that I've seen on this site. I actually scored the side of the shock with a grinder, then I used a drill bit to drill a hole in the side of the shock. No goo... nothing. It's completely empty. Then I tried pounding on it with a big mallet to try to compress it. No luck. Question: Do I need to drill through the "thicker" part of the shock? I went ahead and installed the bumper on the car, and it still sticks out about 3 inches more than I'd like.
