  1. I know this is an old thread, but this oil filter seal problem did not go away. Ask me how I know. The cause of that problem is that the filter used on the M10 engine has a mounting face area of about 6 square inches. When you apply 100 PSI to 6 square inches you get, you guessed it, 600 pounds of force pushing the oil filter away from the filter adapter. This distorts the mounting face of the filter and allows the seal to pop out. After this happens, the filter will be loose because the sheet metal that contains the mounting thread has permanently changed shape. Repositioning the seal and then remounting the filter is probably not a good idea, since we don't know what happened inside the housing. I know that Ireland Engineering sell a high pressure filter made by Mahle, but they claim that it will only keep the housing from bulging, but will not solve the seal problem. I find it difficult to believe that Mahle did not solve this problem with the heavy duty version of their filter. Does anybody know any more about this Mahle filter?

  3. Michael, I do not use PWM and the fan has only one speed. I don't mind if it cycles on and off. I do not have AC. I do not have any cooling problems and the fan hardly ever runs if the car is moving at all. However, I live near Seattle and the temperature hardly ever goes past 90 degrees. The Fan has been reliable, but I don't drive the car very much. I hope this helps.

  7. Allbim: How's this measurement with the hose work to test injector leakage? Use the hose like a stethoscope. Just to clarify, I am talking about air leakage between the injector(s) and the manifold. There should be an o-ring.
  8. Although I see no indication of leakage, I notice that the gaskets are compressed a lot at the bottom, but not on top. It looks like someone tightened the bottom fasteners very hard first, and then the top. Did you try to determine if there is air leaking past the injectors? My way of doing this is is to listen with a small diameter hose. You cannot just measure the output voltage of a narrow band oxygen sensor because it consists of on-of 5 volt pulses.
  9. Changing to a MAF setup to fix the problem makes no sense. These engines ran just fine with the original setup. Are you using an aftermarket ECU that you can tune?

  11. The S14 crank uses a different damper and I'm sure BMW has a reason for that. Cutting the snout will not let you use that damper. Machining the timing cover to accept the larger S14 seal takes 30 minutes or less on a CNC mill.

I was thinking of zero power to the wheels. Anyway, It wouldn't hurt to check some voltages; staring at the battery. You don't even need a volt meter. A cheap trouble-light from HF will do.

  14. Some stainless steel alloys are magnetic, some are not. Some of the non-magnetic alloys can become magnetic when work-hardened.
  15. Nonsense. In that case the pump would overheat whenever the engine idles and uses very little fuel. What the tech said might apply to a high pressure FI pump, where most of the fuel is bypassed via the pressure regulator (in the engine compartment) back to the tank.
  16. 2002 tubing is 50mm dia. I have always favored the use of a slip joint (spline) because when you accelerate or brake hard, the engine and transmission will want to move back and forth and it seems strange to have the diff and guibos restrict that movement.

  19. Thanks jrhone, there is about a 1/8" difference in the rolling radius of my 13" spare and the 15" (lower profile) tires an the car. I think that will be OK.
  20. Well, it just dawned on me. If one of my 15" front tires goes flat, I can simply move a rear wheel to the front and the put the 13" spare on the rear. It just means that I have to change 2 wheels instead of one. -------- Saved myself some money. Sometimes I miss the obvious.
