  1. emmodg Sorry for not getting to your question. Those items you are asking about look good (typical for these cars at their age). The worst rust areas are the rockers and the spare tire well which I've tried to document in the pictures. If you need anything more specific you are welcome to call or text me at my contact number I listed. Thanks for your interest Austin
  2. Sorry for the radio silence from me on this thread over the past few days. I am in Santa Barbara, very near where the Thomas Fire is burning now. We have been very occupied with the fire activity and paying close attention to it's progress. Ever since last Tuesday it has been nearly impossible to venture outside due to the heavy smoke and ash fall. I have had several requests for additional, more specific photos. Today was the first day there was any opportunity to take additional photos and I'm posting them now. Hopefully they address what some of you were looking to see. As you can plainly see by the dust and ash, the air quality here is horrible.
  3. Thanks for your kind words and well wishes, much appreciated! AP
  4. 1971 BMW 2002, $10,500 OBO Polaris white w/ black interior Odometer reads - 40448 Engine, chassis and steering column numbers match. Contact: Austin 805-895-3959 austin.prince@yahoo.com I have owned this car since February of 2007. When I purchased it the car was essentially stock, except for some internal engine mods/upgrades that I would discover later. From the beginning my intention was to perform some light restoration work and focus on performance mods to make a fun driver. I have achieved most of what I set out to accomplish with this car, and with two kids and a busy life I'm realizing I don't really have the space anymore to enjoy this car the way that it should be enjoyed. I'm hoping I can now pass it on to another 02 enthusiast for them to pick up where I've left off. BODY/PAINT When the car came to me there was minor front end, passenger side damage caused by a "rear ending" incident. The PO had neglected to replace a leaking rear wheel cylinder and you can imagine the rest. The front end damage was repaired at a local body shop using a NOS early style front clip. In addition to the front end repair, there is a scattering of other minor, typical issues. The rocker panels on both sides have some areas of rust. Not major at this point, but in time will certainly need to be replaced. The driver's side door has some separation in a seam weld near the vent window (most likely from the front end collision). This door also does not have a functioning door brake. The mounting bracket which the brake attaches to broke off and needs repair (I have two new door brakes and mounting brackets). Some minor surface rust around the hood badge. Rust and pitting at the driver's side rear wheel arch. This was clearly repaired with filler in the past and will likely require a patch panel to be welded in to be repaired properly. Passenger side rear quarter panel has a silver dollar sized dent which has popped the paint off and is showing light surface rust. The spare tire well in the trunk shows the type of rusting typical of these cars. Some areas have come through and you can see some light through them. Still structurally very sound but will need to be properly repaired. Rear shock towers are in excellent condition - no rust. Paint is original. It's not great, but also not terrible. This is a driver, not so much a show car. A perfect car to wring out on a rally and not worry about rock chips, dings, etc. INTERIOR When I purchased the car the carpet was in rough shape, especially on the driver's side. I purchased a carpet kit and recently installed it. Looks great. Front and rear door cards are in good condition. Rear door cards are missing ash trays. Dash is in very good condition. No cracks or peeling. One small hole near the left side of the instrument cluster (looks like PO tried to install hazard light switch here?). Headliner is also in very clean condition with no holes or tears. The stock front seats have been replaced with Recaro Sports. They are in good, clean condition. There is one small tear on the driver's seat, on the outer bolster. Recaros are mounted with aluminum mounting rails supplied by Lee at Massive. Rear seat in very good condition, no holes or tears. I replaced the stock steering wheel with a 370mm Prototipo wheel, which is still in like new condition. The center console is the short type, in good condition with some wear. The mounting point for the emergency brake handle (welded to the tunnel) has a crack in it and causes the brake handle to have a "wobbly" feel. Still 100% functional, but needs repair. New E brake cables. Instrument cluster has been completely disassembled, cleaned and refreshed with new bulbs - very bright and looks sharp. SUSPENSION/STEERING/BRAKES/WHEELS Both front and rear subframes were removed, cleaned, painted and completely rebuilt. New lower control arms. New strut bearings. Full suspension (front/rear) refresh kit from Blunttech (rubber, not urethane). Stage I spring and sway bar kit and fixed camber plates from Ireland Engineering. Volvo front big brake kit and 320 rear drum kit from Ireland Engineering, with braided stainless lines. New wheel bearings, front and rear. Rear shock tower brace / battery relocation kit from Top End Performance. Close ratio steering box (silver), fully disassembled, inspected (very clean, little wear) and refreshed with kit from Ireland Engineering. Urethane steering coupler. Currently running a set of 15x6 VW Scirocco wheels, in pretty decent shape. Full set of new lug nuts for alloys. ENGINE/TRANS/DRIVELINE The engine was pulled for a refresh and currently has approximately 500 miles since the refresh work was performed. Here's what was done: Block tanked and honed E21 head sourced to replace original worn head (minor cracking) Head / front cover surfaced Guides (8) removed and replaced with new Install cam from original head (Elgin "turbo") One exhaust seat was bad - replace with new Inspect pistons for wear. Pistons in excellent condition Check rod big ends - good Mangaflux and grind crank New rings (89.5mm) New main bearings (first under .25mm) New rod bearings (first under .25mm) All new gaskets - upper and lower Freeze plugs New head bolts New timing chain and guide (all engine parts from Ireland Engineering) When the work was performed and the machinist took a look at the parts, I was told that the crank and pistons are from a 320, not a 2002. Clearly at some point in the past a PO replaced these parts with a performance upgrade in mind. These are the parts that went back into the engine during reassembly. Machine work was performed by Import Auto Parts of Santa Barbara. Engine assembly was performed by me. After reassembly it started immediately and runs smooth and strong. Additional engine info Nearly new EMPI 38/38 electric choke carb from Ireland Engineering. I have replaced the electric choke with a manual choke. Much easier than the PITA electric one....Intake manifold is the "Cannon" type. New water pump from IE. All new exhaust from the block to the bumper: ceramic coated shorty header, stainless downpipe, stainless exhaust kit (early style), all from IE. Intake and exhaust manifolds installed with all new studs and nuts. Engine driven fan replaced with 12" electric fan kit from IE. New HD rubber engine mounts (both sides). New Bosch SR440X (M3) starter. Distributor (JFUR4 0231 1 115 081) was completely rebuilt by Advanced Distributors. 4 speed Getrag 240 has been replaced with a Getrag 245 5 speed OD. I sourced the transmission from the 2002FAQ board. Mileage was unknown at the time of purchase. Front and rear seals replaced and fluid drained and replaced with new. New pilot bearing installed. Transmission runs well with no noise in all gears. 5 speed shift plate and short shift lever from IE. Flywheel and clutch replaced with 215mm type. Flywheel and clutch plate ground and balanced at Import Auto Parts of Santa Barbara. New 215mm throw out bearing. Also installed a brass clutch pivot pin while it was all apart. New long speedo cable for 5 speed conversion from IE. Driveshaft was professionally shortened, balanced and rebuilt (U joints and center bearing) by Aardvarc Racing. Transmission rear support bracket from 2002 Haus. Stainless clutch line, new slave cylinder, and new 8 bolt guibo and bolts from IE. 3:91 LSD differential. Sourced from 2002FAQ board. Mileage unknown. Runs quietly. Redrilled output shafts and spacers from IE. New rear cover gasket. C/V joints disassembled, cleaned, reassembled with fresh grease and new boots. ELECTRICAL/MISC STUFF Upgraded wiring harness for H4 bulbs from Susquehanna Motorsports. 85 amp alternator upgrade. Euro style front turn signals. They're not super clean, but they are decent and functional. 1600 rear light assemblies (red center dot). Good condition. Overall the wiring harness for this car was in pretty rough shape when it came to me. It was clear that the previous owner(s) had attempted to perform electrical work over the years, which had taken a toll on the overall neatness and cleanliness of the harness. There were wires laying everywhere, and some damage to the lighting circuit caused by a PO attempting to run H4 bulbs without doing any upgrade work to handle the added load on the system (hence the upgrade harness from Susquehanna). I have spent a lot of time going through the harness from front to back in an attempt to bring it as close as possible back to how it appears on the wiring diagram (with the exception of any upgrade work) and make it as tidy and clean as possible. I have made great progress in this area, but there are probably some areas that could still be improved on.
  5. Hi, everyone Haven't posted here for some time. Been out of the game for a while now and all my 2002 stuff is going to be sold. Starting with these wheels: ROTA R-20 Alpina Turbine reproductions (set of 4) 15" x 6" 4 x 100 Offset 29 Bought these wheels a few years back as part of a group buy on this forum. My intent was to run them on my '71 2002, but I never got to it and they've sat in the boxes in my shop ever since. They are MINT, never been mounted, barely ever out of the boxes for pictures. They come with a choice of two dust caps as seen in the pictures - standard cap or Alpina style. $600, PayPal. I'm in Santa Barbara, CA. If a So Cal person wants to travel to come pick them up that's fine, otherwise shipping in the continental US will be actual cost Ground UPS to your address. Thanks for looking Austin
  6. Thanks, Toby! Will take my time and make sure it's right. Appreciate your input.
  7. I'm looking to get some info on proper installation method for the rear seal (1971 2002 M10). I've searched and found posts with pictures that show it's orientation in the bracket, so I'm clear on that. I just need some guidance on how to actually put it in the bracket. Does it need any RTV/sealant? Should I wipe a thin smear of oil around the edge and just press it in? Should it go all the way in until it seats against the bracket? I've read a few posts that seem to indicate you should try to position it so that it doesn't ride in the exact same place as the previous one. Is this the case? Thanks in advance for any advice you can give. Since this was the reason for pulling the motor in the first place (rear seal was leaking badly), I sure do want to make sure I get this right.
  8. Seats are gone. BBS wheels are gone. Thanks everyone who responded.
  9. If Josh doesn't take the dome light, I'll take it. Thanks
  10. Door brakes arrived today. Great seller. Well packed, great communication. Exactly as represented. Thanks.
  11. I'll take the door checks for $60 shipped. Paypal? Let me know and I'll shoot you the $. email sent.
  12. Filler arrived yesterday, filled up the car on the way to work this morning. These things are very well made and work like a charm. If you listen carefully when you're getting towards the top, you won't spill a drop! And you can pump gas at full flow!! No more 10 minute fill ups! Highly recommended - thanks Chris!
  13. Just need the inner CV joints, no axles. If you still need pics i can try to get you something tomorrow afternoon. Let me know. Thanks
  14. Are the inboard CV joints still available? Looking for a pair for my diff swap. thanks
  15. If you go the rebuild route, I just sent mine off to Advanced in Minnesota. They essentially do a complete teardown and rebuild using new parts where needed (springs, bushings, etc) and recurve it however you request. They can also install a Pertronix if you choose to go that way as well. Call ahead and they'll set you up with everything you need. IIRC, I paid about $160 for the whole deal, and my distributor is like new. I couldn't be happier with the product I received as well as the customer service. Highly recommend. It takes a few weeks but it's worth it. http://www.advanceddistributors.com/ just my 2 cents, good luck.
  16. Looking for a replacement stock coil (black) for my '71 2002. Don't care what it looks like, just that it works. thanks
