  1. Anyone know if there is any source for front driver side frame rails? Both of the frame rails on my 1974tii are very rusted. I have a passenger side frame rail but I have not found any source for the driver's side. Anyone know of a source or maybe has a driver's side frame rail? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Steve
  2. Gregg, I'm pretty sure you want an 81-82 5-speed transmission as the 83 320i 5 speed is different. Anyway, my 245 came out of a 320i that was in a junkyard so I can't guarantee its condition. I think its OK but can't be 100% sure. I have a couple of people local who want to see it. If they don't buy it, I'll get back to you. Steve
  3. I have a 245 I removed from a 320i in a local junkyard many years ago. I am located in Charleston, SC. Contact me and we can discuss a price and where we can meet up. Steve
  4. I spotted a red 1974 tii on Folly Road, James Island, SC yesterday at about noon. Really nice car. Just curious if it was someone from this forum. The car had SC plates. Would love to see the car again and talk to owner. I was right behind the car in my truck and gave him a thumbs up. Steve
  5. Bill, sorry about your accident. I saw your car today parked on Maybank highway on Johns Island. The damage is pretty severe (especially the right front) and repair costs will probably be very high due to the cost of replacement panels unless you can find good used panels. Even then, you are probably looking at thousands of dollars in labor and paint. My wife'e Subaru was just hit in the rear and knocked into a car stopped in front of her by a driver who also fled the scene. The damage was not as severe as your's and the repair bill was $7500 which was actually lower than I was expecting. If you do decide to part your car out, I would be interested in some of your interior parts. Steve
  6. My '74's passenger side panel was separated much like yours. I removed it and the driver's side to check for any hidden rust. Didn't find any. They are a real pain to remove. The passenger side came out with no 'damage' to the outer panel but the driver's side was still glued in and some 'damage' was done in removing it. Nothing a hammer and dolly and a little bondo can't fix. If you don't suspect any rust behind your panels, I would agree with the other posters to reattach the panel using a good adhesive. Steve
  7. Recaro seats need an 'adapter' to bolt in a 2002 and in an e21. The 'adapter' most people use are the factory ones bolted to the Recaro seats in e21's. This 'adapter' allows the seat rail from either the e21 or the 2002 to be bolted to the Recaro seat and then bolted into the car. This 'adapter' is shown in the 4th post of this thread. The posters who said their e21 Recaros bolted in without 'adapters' probably had the factory e21 'adapters' already bolted on their seats. Some people prefer to buy or make flat 'adapters' to allow the seats to sit lower. You can also make these 'adapters' to move the seats over to center them better. Hope this is useful info, Steve
  8. From my understanding, only the power vw Recaro seats will bolt up to the 320i brackets (you may need to enlarge the holes in the bracket as the vw Recaro's mounting bolts are larger). These are standard Recaro seats bolted to the vw power base. Remove the base and discard it. The vw manual Recaro look alikes mount using vw's oddball 3-point mount system and would be a pain to adapt to a 2002. Steve
  9. Ray, I also saw Pete's M2 at The Vintage. I knew his 2002tii when he converted it to m20 power in the '80s. At that time he was running 5-lugs at all 4 corners so he wasn't using the 2 caliper setup up front. He was running non-vented front discs from either early 5-series or a Bavaria. Not sure what he did on the rear, but he was running 5-lug drum brakes somehow. I don't know when the car was switched to s14 power or what kind of brakes its running now. Steve
  10. I seem to remember discussing this type of setup with Pete McHenry back in the '80s. If I remember correctly, it used a 320i vented rotor, 320i hub, and 2 320i vented calipers and I think it also required tii struts to mount the 320i calipers. Steve.
  11. John, they are not sound deadening panels but are steel panels added for additional strength for the 5 mph bumpers mandated by US regulations. That being said, they can be removed. I removed them from my '74. One side was already coming loose and had rust under it. They are a real pain in the a** to remove. They first have to be seperated from the quarter panels and the adhesive BMW used is really strong. One side on mine wasn't too bad but the other side was really hard. I ended up with some quarter panel damage in the area between the door jamb and wheel opening that will have to be fixed (hammer/dolly and body filler). The panels also have to be cut up into many pieces to get them out. I used snips, die grinders with cut off wheels, and a dremel tool. It was not a fun job and I'm not sure I would do it now. Steve
  12. I mounted my '74 very similar to Ravensix by using the rear crossmember mounting points. I also ran a piece of rectangular tubing across under the rear bolted to the differential mounts and tied into the square tubing bolted to the rear crossmember mounts. I thought about using my bumper mounts but mine had some rust and I didn't feel like they were adequate to fully support the shell. Better safe than sorry. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.
  13. Its been a while since I removed mine but I remember having to move the panels either forward or back as far as possible and cutting them as close to the back seat panel as possible to get them out from that area.
  14. Taymar, sorry but I don't remember any specific problems with the area around the jack bracket in the trunk. The worst of mine was the driver's side inside the car below the side window (adhesive wouldn't give and ended up damaging the quarter panel in this area). I do remember having to cut the panel into many pieces on that side in the trunk to get it out.
  15. I removed them from my '74. It is not an easy task. One side on my car was starting to separate and I was concerned about rust between the panels. I ended up cutting them into several pieces to get them out. I used a dremel with a cutoff wheel (my air tool wouldn't fit). I did end up with some damage to one quarter panel as a result of separating the panels - the adhesive is tough. Hopefully, some hammer and dolly time will fix the damage. Steve
  16. I cut 1 coil off my front Eibachs - but I don't remember which end. The car still sits high in the front to me. One thing to know is now my springs are loose on the strut - if you jack the car up the spring can fall to the side and come out of its seat. I would think if you were to get the front wheels off the ground on a bump it could do the same. I drilled some holes in the spring seats and wired the springs to the seats to prevent this from happening. All said, I want to go coilovers so I can get the front down lower. Steve
  17. Not that uncommon. I've seen several in the PnP's around Charleston. E21's and 2002's are getting much less common to find.
  18. The e30 m42 would be your best choice - engine, trans, etc. If you get an e36 m42, you will need the 2-piece oil pan and pickup from an e30 m42 or you will have all kinds of fit issues. I'm not sure but I also believe you'll need the e30 intake and valve cover also (it also looks much better). I'm not sure about the e36 m42 transmission as far as it fitting. The later m42 (I belive its 93+) heads are a little better than the earlier heads with lighter valves and slightly better flow - look at Metric Mechanics site for the differences). 1996 and later are m44's which are very different engines. The biggest problem I see with this swap is the exhaust manifold. Hope this helps, Steve
  19. I've sprayed both. I think it depends a lot on your color. Metallics, especially light colors, I would definitely go base/clear. Solid colors, I would probably go single stage. As far as I know, BMW still uses single stage for their non-metallic colors. I have a red 2002 Toyota work truck which is outside all the time and completely neglected as far as paint goes and it still looks fine - no oxidation or discoloration at all. Your car looks to be white and if you keep it that color and use quality paint, I think single stage will be fine. Plus, its easier to do touch ups later. Just my $.02, Steve
  20. I will be running the e21 323i rear trailing arms on my 2002 (if and when I get it put back together). I wanted them for similiar reasons - good parking brake, stonger axles/hubs, etc. I'm just going to use the stock rotors (same as e30 325i) along with e30 325i calipers. It would probably be pretty simple to adapt fixed calipers on the rear but getting vented rotors is probably going to be costly (special hats w/seperate rotors). I don't know of any stock vented rotors that will fit. As for the cost, I found a rusty 323i for $500 and parted it out saving the trailing arms and 5-speed for my 2002. The spring perches and shock mounts were fairly easy to adapt. Steve
  21. Corvettes have always had the standard Chevy 5 on 4.75" pattern (very close to BMW's 5 bolt wheels) - from 1953 to at least the C5's (I don't have any experience with C6's but I'd bet they are the same). Corvette wheels are relatively common on Volvos but they run adapters.
  22. My brother had a set of Zenith wire wheels on his model A street rod in the seventies and it had adapters like those in your pics that allowed them to be mounted to standard Ford (4.5"), Chevy (4.75") and large GM (5") hubs.
  23. Interesting as I recently picked up a set of BBS rs005's (3-piece 16 x 7) on a ratty 528e in a local pick-n-pull. I have tii front struts (easy conversion to 5-lug using 5-series parts) and I have e21 323i rear trailing arms which would work with these adapters. All I'll need now is the proper size flairs - the fun never stops.
  24. Doug, I've only been there once. As far as I know, it is held every Saturday near the Atlanta Bread Company. The day I was there, there was a wide mix of cars - older British, late model domestic and import, motorcycles - very varied. There were several BMW's there that day, a 2002, 320is, older 535i, and some newer ones. Steve
  25. I'm in Charleston also. Live on James Island - work in Moncks Corner. Maybe we could all meet up one Saturday at the cars and coffee meet they have at the Mt. Pleasant town center every Saturday morning. Starts at 9:00 am and lasts for about an hour. I've only been there once as my car is disassembled now. This Saturday probably wouldn't be too good as its supposed to rain. Steve
