  1. Hi Mark. This is Jim Kline. I purchased the Polaris 1975 from you a few years ago. (637 MZZ) She’s doing well, I don’t drive her often but a blast when I do. You mentioned that you replaced front brakes with Volvo parts, I haven’t needed them yet but when the pads need replacing how do I know what pads to use? Thanks

      Jim:

Bill seems to be winding down his direct involvement in the business.  His son is doing some additional work at the shop, but I'm not sure if this is full time.  I am trying to get him to commit to sorting out the electrical issues on my 1970 after it gets out of the paint shop.  We'll see how it goes.

When and if you replace the front brake pads, you might consider having the calipers re-drilled to sit lower on the rotor, you can see in the picture that the pad sits 1/4" above the rotor.  I think Ireland Engineering provides this service.  Not really necessary because as is, the Volvo caliper provides more pad surface than stock, even in its current state, but considered best practice.

      Jim:

Good to hear the 1975 is still providing thrills.  Yes, I did upgrade the front brakes on that car, (see picture).  I used the same calipers that came with the Ireland Engineering kit.  You can get them from them, or you can just order pads for Girling Vented Calipers for a mid-80s Volvo 240 with VENTED brakes.

In hindsight, I should have kept that car and used it for my S14 motor upgrade.  I am now neck deep in a restoration on a 1970 BMW 1600 which needs everything to complete.

      Best regards,

  3. Hey Mark,

just saw a post that said you were running a 292 headers, a 123 ignition and a single 45. How’l do you like it?  I was thinking almost the same thing...  just bought a car and am slowly debugging and collecting parts. I’d love any insights!

I have run this setup in a few cars, so I know it pretty well.  The 123 ignition is the icing on the cake, super easy to setup and bullet-proof, no synching issues with one Weber, 292 IE Cam and shorty header.  Good low end torque and pulls hard right to the redline.  This video was when I first installed this setup on a stock bottom end of my 1975 2002.
