  1. The large nut is a M14 x 1.5 and the small nut is a M12 x 1.5/ You will need the corresponding wave washer based on your steering spindle. You can use a modern locking nylon nut or a conical lock nut from Belmetric. Mark92131 Nuts - Lock Nuts All Metal - BelMetric BELMETRIC.COM

  3. Drop the exhaust and remove the entire driveshaft. You will need to modify a box wrench to remove that nut that holds the 2 sections of driveshaft together to replace the center support bearing. With the driveshaft out of the car, you'll need to rig a piece of flat iron to the mounting holes on the center support bearing to keep the driveshaft from twisting while you remove the nut holding the 2 driveshaft sections together. Don't forget to mark the 2 sections so they go back together correctly to maintain the balance. Search the FAQ for additional tips. Mark92131
  4. I would sell the 5 speed and LSD and use that money to get it running and driving. (either buying the parts and fix it yourself or paying someone to do it). Running and driving in that condition $8K - $10K, as is, $3K - $5K? If no significant rust, it would be a good project for someone with the time and the money to complete the restoration. 5. This topic has some useful information and after the owner updated the post with some recent photos, we were able to provide some specific advice. So photos will help. Mark92131
  6. Just guessing, but possibly where a stud/fitting goes through the block into the water jacket or a stud on the head goes all the way through and requires lock-tight to prevent oil from leaking out? Mark92131
  7. I found it while browsing Craigslist for parts. Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you learn lessons. Not sacrilegious at all, others have done it. Sourcing a nice, working, "silver dollar" cluster is getting hard, especially finding the matching tach. Classic Instruments has a line of accessory gauges that match if you go that route. Mark92131
  8. This is more like "What did you do to your 2002/1600 for the last 4 days". Well I did something no one should attempt. I pulled the heater core out of the heater box without removing it completely from under the dash. Why, mostly desperation! As you may recall, while running the S14 motor in the 1600, I had coolant running out of the heater box and pooling inside the driver and passenger floorboards. Assuming that the heater core had blown a seam, I started the process of removing the heater box from under the dash. Two 10mm bolts, a couple of ground wires, four fan wires and the heater and air control levers and it should come out, right? Not so fast, I swapped in a 1 piece dash and it covers the mounting hardware for the heater and air control levers on the 1600, so the dash would also need to be removed to get the heater box out. Rather than spend hours pulling the dash, I decided that I should be able to drop the heater box enough to pull the top off and extract the heater core. If I was 5'10" and 165 lbs this would have been a good approach, but at 6'3" and 215 lbs this was stupid. It took me 1 day to get it out, 1 day to test it and come to the realization it wasn't leaking, and 2 days to put it back together and reinstall it. Turns out the inlet heater hose on the driver's side was leaking into the top of the box. Some lessons are harder than others. Mark92131
  9. 3M Adhesive Spray 90 on both the material and the surface should do the trick. Let it get tacky and then stick it on. I assume you have the original boards. Mark92131
  10. Wow, I looked for that car in CA for over 20 years after selling my 1976 because of smog issues. With time running out for my S14 swap, I ended up with my 1970 BMW 1600. Bring a Trailer is the right venue for your car, people pay up for original cars! Yours will do well on BAT. Mark92131
  11. Take a lot of pictures, especially the problem areas, (rockers, frame rails, trunk, etc.). Review like cars in the Classified section under cars for sale to get a feel for pricing. Post your ad here to find it a good home. If no bites, eBay, Craigslist, Offer-up, Facebook Marketplace, and BringATrailer will get more eyeballs on it. Mark92131
  12. Did you change the seals on the shift selector and output shaft? Mine looked good until I fired up my engine and they proceeded to leak. Now I'm looking at pulling the transmission back out. Mark92131
  13. I have a pair. The castle nut on one runs down easily. The other binds slightly half way down. The splines look good. It looks like they were drilled for both 2002 and E21 half-shafts (LSD conversion). PM me if you are interested. Mark92131
  14. If you have a "silver dollar" cluster, this tach will fit. I don't know anything about the seller, just a random local ad on Craigslist. Here's a picture of my summer box. Still has the clamp for the snorkel. I also have the hose to the air cleaner and the paper hose that connects to the cover over the exhaust manifold. Summer box $30 Hoses $15 Plus Shipping Mark92131
  15. This ad has been up for a while, but the price is right. I have a couple of summer boxes if you need one. 16. It's a 6 fuse car. Parking light (R&L) on fuse #1, Tail light right on fuse #2 and Tail light left on fuse #3. Mark92131
  17. My 1970 BMW 1600 has this feature (1571037), it also has the turn signal switch with the individual connectors. The "P" connector on the turn signal switch is connected to the "P" connector on the ignition switch with a green wire which provides power to the parking lights when the stalk is activated right or left when the ignition switch is off. I learned about this feature the hard way by running down the battery in my 1971 BMW 1600 Cab after switching it on by accident in the garage. Mark92131
  18. Reseda Green? Very pretty color, one of my favorites. Not a 1600 color, but 320i, BMW 1500 and other models. Mark92131
  19. Here's a writeup on how I cleaned up the trim on my 1975 Mintgrun car. Mark92131
  20. Now that my open exhaust issue is resolved, a rainy day in CA is perfect for working in the garage. So let's get tuning. Last time I was able to get the engine to fire, so today I wanted to see if it would actually run. Went back through the Megasquirt II (MicroSquirt) tuning documentation, made a few tweaks based on the writeup from @AustrianVespaGuy. Started the data log, turned the key, began cranking, timing light flashing and it fired... and died. Tried it again, fired and kept going. It actually started around 2000 RPM and slowly settled down to about 1500 RPM. I checked the static timing (which was suppose to be fixed at 10 degrees BTDC) and it was more like 20). Let it idle about 5 minutes until the coolant temp was around 180, shut it down and sent the data log to @AustrianVespaGuy who reminded me that I needed to fix the timing at 10 degrees on initial startup and not use the table. Made the changes and restarted the car. Things were going smoothly, rock steady idle, static timing needed adjustment, but the motor sounded very happy, and then things went sideways in a hurry... Coolant was pooling under the car, but from where? Basically everywhere! The heater core blew a seam and coolant was flowing into the pedal box. But wait, why is oil leaking from the front driver's side? Because the oil filter gasket is leaking! Wait what's this? A small pool of MTL dripping on the floor from the Guibo? Is the rear seal on the 5 speed bad? I was told it was replaced (5 years ago)? So it looks like I'll be pulling things apart before I get back to the fun stuff. So much promise, dashed so quickly. Mark92131
  21. Code light popped up that Vanos system was compromised, (plugged up). Spent a bunch of money trying to fix it. Finally had to let it go for next to nothing. Lesson learned on buying cars from out of State based on pictures, (although it will probably happen again). Mark92131
  22. Thanks, me too. Working on tuning it today, now that the exhaust is done. Mark92131
  23. Yes, great car until it wouldn't smog in CA. Sold it and scaled down to a 2020 M2 Competition. Mark92131
  24. I miss my original paint 75 PastellBlau BMW 2002. One of 3 I have owned in this color. Mark92131
  25. Completed the installation of the exhaust system for the S14 motor in my BMW 1600. I was pretty happy with the way it turned out Mark92131
