  1. Again, I am not attacking IE. Somebody up the chain, probably at the Weber factory, assembled this thing using a particular set of jets. I just wish that information could have been shared with the end user.
  2. No, it is not rocket science. When they build a rocket, somebody maintains a record of what parts were used to assemble it. Apparently, when they build a carburetor, they keep a record of every part except the jets.
  3. I get that additional tuning will be needed and that it varies from engine to engine, but without knowing what jets it ships with, I don't know which jets to order. And I'd rather not just order a bunch blind and hope that some of them work. I assumed that a carb with a given part number would have the same jets supplied, but apparently this is not the case. Time to unbolt it and pull the jets to see what is in there. Something that probably should have done before the install... Just to be clear, I don't blame IE for not having the mechanical specs, I am just frustrated that the information does not exist.
  4. That is true, and I do appreciate your willingness to help, but the fact remains that no one, not even Redline it seems, can tell me what the baseline is on that carb.
  5. So I got a Redline Weber 32/36 kit from Ireland Engineering, brought it to Martin Motorsports for installation, and it runs way rich, even when leaned out. Clearly, I need different jets but I need to know what is already in there to know what to order. Martin tells me they have no idea what the set up was, and suggests I send it back to Ireland. Ireland tells me they have no idea what the setup is on the kit they sell. Redline tells me they have no idea and they need to do some research (that was last week - no response). It seems amazing to me that nobody can tell me what the hell is in there so I can just buy the right parts! I have the famous CD formula, but rather than just order everything based on that, I'd like to know what is already in it so I can get an idea of where the problem lies. Does anybody know the answer, or where I can find it? Thanks!
  6. Cool. Becker Autosound wants $28 for DIN-to-minijack, and I have dropped an email to Old Auto Radio. I will post an update once I get it all together.
  7. I recently saw on www.beckerautosound.com, that they are offering a cable to connect an aux input to Becker Grand Prix and Europa models that had DIN inputs for external cassette units. My ancient Blaupunkt Bavaria also has a DIN input, although I have no idea what it was originally for. I have found that a standard 5-pin DIN cable does not fit as the pins not spaced the same way. Has anyone tried this set-up on a vintage Becker or Blaupunkt?
  8. So... it a beautiful day for a drive, the old 02 fires up right away and I pull away, only to have it stall in the middle of the street. Cranks, but will not re-start. The fuel filter looked like it had a bit of junk in it so I replaced it. No start. Manually clicked the fuel pump to make sure it was pulling. It is - but no start. Primed the lines with fuel. No start. Blew through the fuel line to the carb to make sure it was clear to the bowl. It is, but no start. Sprayed starter fluid and it started, but only for the moment it took to burn the vapor, then, no start. Since it catches on the starter fluid, I am assuming it is not electrical. Now what? I am running out of ideas, but I know I must be missing something. BTW, I am still running the original Solex. Can anyone tell me what should be next?
  9. Just got my new Autoweek and was stunned to see a report that a tan/saddle 1971 2002 sold at aution for $22,000. This was not a turbo or even a tii, just a standard 02. Now this was a one-owner car that had been treated to a ground up resto, but back in 1994, with a dual Weber conversion and 320i wheels. The article described it as nice, but "it could have been presented better." The author noted that the price was high, but said we should expect excellent examples to go for $30k soon. Don't get me wrong, I am all in favor of our cars appreciating in value, and it has convinced my wife that my 02 has earned its spot in the garage, but does this price seem a bit nuts?
  10. Check www.firstfives.org. They have a parts interchange list for the E12 5-series and other models. The seats from an E12 will swap for the E28 seats as well. I know some E12 owners have put E30 sport seats in their E12s, so you might find a buyer on that board. It is not a bolt-in swap however, the rails need modification to fit. So: E30s will fit E12 and E28 5-series with some effort. - Nevada 71
  11. Now that I look, it is a 3-tone horn. Thanks for the tip! I'll give it a try.

  13. A forum search will give you a ton of info, but here is what I have found. The 1977-79 55A E21 unit (AL116X) should be a straight bolt-in. The 1980-83 65A E21 65A (AL44X) will not bolt in without 320i brackets, in which case you might as well go all out with the E30 318 80A conversion (see Zenon's site). However, the AL41X is a 65A that was used on the 1981 E12 (i think) and maybe some 1980-81 E21s and this is a direct bolt-in. Some units (not sure which) have a longer center bolt that can interfere with the fan. After some false starts, my solution was to contact Steve at Eagle Electric (eaglekh@aol.com) who is a frequent eBay seller. I told him I wanted a 65A to go into a 2002 and asked him to grind down the center bolt to clear. He hooked me up with exactly what I needed, with fan and pulley attached. Because it is a repainted rebuild, it has no Bosch part number on it so I can't confirm its an AL41X, but I suspect it is. I also understand that many Bosch alts can accept the front housings of others so you can swap bits to make a 65A fit the existing brackets, or maybe even other higher output units, but this is more that I cared to tinker with. I would not worry about too much current, but I would make sure I had nice fat ground wires. Good Luck! Remember: YMMV.
  14. No doubt the only reason the roundie shell was shredded so easily was because it was nothing but rust and bondo. At least that is what I choose to believe so I can sleep tonight.
  15. I have a dual-tone air horn in my car. It works fine, but it makes an alternating-tone sound which I hate. It sounds like a clown car. Any idea how I can re-wire the horns so that they both blow at once? Nevada 71
  16. I have an old Blaupunkt Bavaria S that I am itching to install. Problem is, I cannot figure out how to attach the speaker leads. Normal-sized spade or pin connections are either too big or too small. Bare wire does not make a good connection either. It also has a DIN plug below the conventional cannections which I suspect carries the same info. If anyone can direct me to a wiring harness and diagram, I would be much obliged. Thanks!
  17. So after some false starts, I finally got the right alternator: 65A, center bolt shaved down, mounting tabs the right size, etc. But the housing is cracked right at the screw at the midpoint between the upper and lower mounting tabs. The rest looks stout enough, but this crack goes clean through. This cannot be good. Should I send it back to the rebuilder, or is it not worth worrying about?
