I believe, Slavs, that at some point during the 1967 model year — probably around April or May 1967 — BMW began installing the U.S.-spec style license plate lights in lieu of the rear-bumper-mounted units. And the rear bumper was, thus, switched to the style used until April 1971.

The ten-slat center grille, as you know and as seen here, is another indicator of the 1966 and 1967 model years.

    Best regards,

    Steve

Indeed, my 1530962, born July 4th 1967 was delivered with US style overriders and license plate lights mounted on the tail panel.

And, this 1529682 born June 22nd 1967 appears to be original with the normal ‘67 bumpers and license lights.

100% correct. “Regular” production of U.S.-spec tii’s — all of which were 1972 models, unlike Euro-spec tii’s, which included 1971 models — did not start until October 1971. And there were perhaps no U.S. retail deliveries in 1971.

    Best regards,

    Steve

I’ve met a guy who ordered a Malaga Tii and  picked it up in December ‘71 from Peter Pan BMW just south of San Francisco. Sadly he sold the car within a year to get a 911, and didn’t remember the VIN.

I believe 2760000 or 2760001 is sitting in Sacramento, Ca and is Inka Orange. I laid eyes on it a few times. It is partially restored (painted body).

There is no 0000, I have confirmed that with BMW Group Archive in person. But yes, 2760001 has been in the hands of Sacramento Chapter BMWCCA past president Patricia deWitt for well over thirty years. I remember hearing about when she bought it when I was a teenager. I’ve seen the car many times over the last 15 or so years, and have had a good hand in documenting it as well. It has recently changed hands, but will be staying in the Western US. I know who the new owner is, and perhaps you do as well, but have been sworn to secrecy.

  4. Follow your heart. If you want it shiny and nice, then follow that path. If you want to preserve the patina for as long as you can,  I would give it a good deep scrubbing with Bon Ami or Comet. Then I’d mask what is necessary, and spray it with a matte clear.

Miata, 2320 with a tank of gas which is probably what most roundies with the typical upgrades weigh(Recaros, 5spd, sway bars, volvo/e21 brakes, and 15" wheels).

Sure Miatas are fun, BUT, does a Miata have adult sized back seats, a trunk that can hold even half as much as an ‘02 can, a fixed roof? Mazda goes above and beyond to keep Miatas light weight and fun at a reasonable price. Wouldn’t it be AWESOME if a car company did that with a small sporty SEDAN, hatch, or wagon/touring? Apples and oranges, again.

    The Smart Fortwo weighs 1940lbs.

    Mitsubishi mirage weighs 2095lbs.

Ooo, a cheap shot from the back of the room. Come on, let’s compare apples to apples here. There were tiny econo cars even in the ‘02’s day. A ‘71 Honda N600 weighed 1213lbs! I don’t even mean to compare a 3-Series. A 1-Series, or a Ford Focus, Toyota Carolla, Honda Civic, VW Jetta. Unless they’re stripper base models, they’re all at least 3000lbs, and some closer to 3500…

    Thanks, Jim,

And even BMW dealerships were swapping plastic runners for aluminum runners after the leaking and cracking issues with plastic runners became evident.

We’ll probably never know for certain whether a few tii’s came off the assembly line with 121 heads and the “new-style” intake manifolds, aluminum runners, etc. The parts catalogue, however, shows the “new style” parts for the same VIN’s as the E12 heads.

    Best regards,

    Steve

I’ve probably said this before… In 220+ thousand miles, my parent’s 2760007 never had any plastic intake elbow issues. When we put the car back together in ‘15 and ‘16 and installed the NOS ‘84 US E12 Tii crate engine, I decided to use aluminum intakes in keeping with the head.

    All the best,

    Tom

So… were rear bumperettes possibly an option on 1600-2’s before they became “mandatory options” under the Hoffman Motors regime? And perhaps they were available before they became “mandatory options”? This would explain the ambiguous history of the period up to April 1967.

Why yes, yes the bumperettes were an option, even in Europe, before they were “mandatory” in the US. I’ve seen photos of Euro ‘02s with them in period.

In looking at the rear view of your car it appears you have the later bumper from a 68 or later along with the later license plate lights. I've never seen a factory equipped car with the small bumperettes or bumper guards or whatever you call them paired with the large bumper guards at the rear. So, there seems to be some parts juggling on your car, or its some type of transitional fluke between a 67-68. I don't know, but you have a very nice and clean car.

My 1530962 had the US bumper overriders and license lights from new. My family and I are really only the second owners. It was built July 4th ‘67 and was originally delivered to Harry Weber Motors, San Leandro California.

My 1528923 also had US overriders and license lights. It’s a very original car that was also originally sold new at Harry Weber Motors. It was built June 15th ‘67.

With @der Heilerin’s 1529682 being built June 22nd ‘67, between my two cars, I believe his rear bumper, license lights and center grille are correct. His front Euro bumper pieces are likely  supposed to be the larger US style. It’s a rather original car otherwise. I know a previous owner and he and I chatted about this very subject a number of times.
