  1. I am curious if anyone has experience with Central Insurance? I have a quote from them thru an agent with an agreed value of $29,000 for a base 1975. That's their number by the way and I'm good with it... The policy is not cheap - about 1000.00 / yr for full coverage. I currently have a "regular" policy with Allied for about half that price. I will also add my 1988 325ix and of course the deal is only good if they bundle the home insurance as well. My current agent that I carry all my home and other vehicle policies has not been able to come up with anything for me. My own calls to Hagerty, Chubb, and American collectors have been dead ends once they know I want to drive the car. I use both cars as daily's - one for the winter and one for the summer. I feel the need to get the car adequately insured for the new market out there so I'm fine the increase in cost but I have never heard of this company and am looking for experiences. TIA
  2. Install them correctly with the right resistance and the right unit for the application and they will last for at least 15 years and 125k miles like mine has.
  3. Well said. The average cost to operate a newer car is $0.60 / mile. I have driven 370k miles in 28 years. At a lower avg cost of say 0.30 / mile ( inflation, etc) we have $111,000! How much have I spent? 50k? 70k? It's pretty well sorted now but will eventually have to re-visit body work and another engine down the road. Probably could sell it now for a solid 15k. Looks like a deal to me.....
  4. I too get the the "tii" question regularly. I can hear the tone of disappointment in there voice when i say it's not. It's like, "awww....too bad, you could have had a really cool car like I had ( or my father had) in the day." It's all good though when anybody takes notice and it always leads to some good conversation. At the end of the encounter I drive away in my plain Jane old base 2002 and they drive away in their SUV.
  5. Nice film and cars, but don't forget to latch the hood down!
  6. Similar story for me. Used metalmasters for years , no apparent problem. I get about 40- 50,000 miles from rotors between replacement due to warpage. Is this from the pads? I don't know, but the rotors wear faster than the pads. OK, rotors are cheap. Fine for street performance and pedal feel seems fine. I got ATE pads recently from Blunt and I can't stop the squeal. I've had them out twice and re applied anti-squeal but it keeps coming back. Also, having to use wheel cleaner now to get the dust off every wash. Never had an issue with this before. Is there test data to say the Porterfields give better performance? Or is this subjective?
  7. The switch can be removed from the back by unplugging the wires and removing 2 screws. This is where the spring mechanism is and can be lubricated - maybe more thoroughly than by just inserting some lubricant in the keyhole. This helped "loosen" mine a few years ago and it has worked great since. Try that first as the lock cylinder repair is a little more involved.
  8. What's the latest thought on MM's Surface Turbulence? I don't see any other engine builders machining like that and curious what long term effects it has on carbon buildup, etc.?
  9. They are combusting for sure. Those had about 6000 miles. Been wondering if it's running a bit lean but it seems happy in it's current state. Oil consumption has been about 3/4 quart in 2500-3000 miles.
  10. Nice drive to the high country today...... Independence Pass 12,000 ft.
  11. Annual tune - plugs, filters, valve adjustment. This is tune up # 21 on a 198k mile motor. Still runs well and the plugs looked good......
  12. 195-60-14. A lot of people including myself converted to 14" rims for daily driving and to get a more modern tire for that task. They perform well and look closer to stock with the 60 series sides. I enjoyed numerous sets of Michelin MXV's and Bridgestone RE960's but now the selection has all but disappeared. After I wear out my current and not so exciting set of General tires I am faced with finding 15 inch wheels or going "retro" and back to 13's. Thanks for asking!
  13. I was at a library recently and found this cool book. This looks like a typical 67 1600 RHD but I noticed the Coupe badge on the rear. Was this from the factory or special badging for the UK market?
  14. Thanks for the input Toby. It's been a couple of weeks since driving it but I believe the noise is there all the time, even in neutral. Maybe input shaft? It will all be checked out once apart but just wondering if I'm better off having it towed. The drive is remote and over the continental divide.

    E30 TO bearing

Thanks Jim for the info. We'll look at those when it's apart. I am aware of the spline issue and have had the splines lubricated periodically for regular maintenance. They looked great last time we checked.....
  16. I posted this in the OT area but not much traffic there so; Since there are good knowledgeable people here I'll throw this question out there. I have E30 325ix. Started hearing loud whine from trans tunnel area and feel vibration in clutch pedal. Car shifts fine - no slipping of clutch. I'm thinking TO bearing? Pilot bearing? 270k on original setup so time to do clutch job. I need to get it to shop for this and the preferred shop is 170 miles away. All freeway driving - maybe use the clutch 20-30 times getting on and off the freeway. Is this possible? What else can get damaged? Is it likely to fail and leave me stranded? I remember years ago with the 02 losing the clutch and being able to limp it home with speed shifting and starting in first gear. Is that the worst that can happen here? Sorry for the OT post but Thanks for your thoughts

  19. I too see "typical" leakage / seepage in the photos and have driven half way across country with similar conditions. Just curious though if the front main crank seals can fail catastrophically and dump the engine oil all at once?
  20. That looks fantastic - congratulations and enjoy driving! I bought my first 1600 in high school in '81 and never dreamed I would still be driving 02's.....
  21. That's interesting experience. I bought one years ago and never installed it thinking it did more harm than good. When you do install it do you use some adhesive to hold it in place like a 3M spray?
  22. I have a set of Bosch copper core replacement wires with my pertronix and red coil. It has been working fine for 15 years. You should be fine with an OE set. I don't think the petronix is a high output iginition system per se, It is merely a solid state ignitor and points replacement.
  23. Glad you weren't hurt Gary. Terrible loss but be patient with the insurance company and formulate a plan on how you want to come out of the deal. You should not lose in the end.
  24. Happy Birthday! Looks like life is treating her well!
