Cheers Harry - it was the derby grey that made my drive 10 hours with a trailer on a punt as the photos and info from the vendor were crap. I fully expected to be putting the grey seats into storage for the next 'original' loving owner as I was convinced I'd hate them.

In fact I love them - they don't look the same as the turf 1800 that's up for auction next month (in another recent thread) and are as soft as napa leather. Not to mention they look like new and are comfy beyond decription - I don't know how the horse hair has remained soft and pliable over the last 45 years, but it has.

Sweetness! Congrats Nick, that's a looker to say the least... I've thought Derby would look nice on a NK and now that I've finally seen pictures of a nice one I am convinced. Check out this Derby 1600-2 from last year...

If I actually get around to recommissioning my '67 1800 Automatic I may just paint it Derby instead of it's original Polaris.

I also LOVE those French market taillights. I picked one up from eBay a while back... can't remember which side it is though?!

Anyway, congrats again on a wonderful find!

Ha, Porsche, BMW, VW, Mercedes maybe others as well shared paint color codes just not names. I have seen more than a few Porsche/VW colors that are exact matches for BMW colors. It may be possible that Derby is the same color as Slate Grey... :)

Thanks for the Jaymic tip, I've been out of work for a bit but just nailed down a job so once my past dues are sorted I will look into bits like that.

Nick,

Phenomenal! Thanks for posting all those detailed pictures on your website. I just bought a restored '66 1800 and the photos are a great reference, post more if you feel like it!

The multifunction gauge on my '66 has the indicator lights in different positions and the temperature gauge has no temperatures on it. Does anyone know if this gauge is correct or if it changed in '66. See my gauge here:

Hi Luis, I expect it's original, these cars chopped and changed detail spec all the time, although I also suspect the Garmin is the later model only seen in post 1970 Neue Klasse.

That is one hell of a clean car, a lot of hours must have gone into that.

Never seen an Temp with the Celsius numbers on it, interesting!

Love the Derby and the color combo works well!

Thanks for posting the photos as I've never seen an 1600 first hand.

I spy the booster less brakes, how does that feel?

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
