TII 5-speed tranny...?

Hey guys (and maybe gals), I'm new to 02FAQ, so take it easy on me :) First post:

Is this really a tii transmission?

http://salem.craigslist.org/pts/1616105773.html

Did tii's come with a 5-sp? I've got a non-tii 02 and am working on getting a 5-speed into it. I can't find much info about putting tii tranny's into non-tii's, just that great tutorial on here about putting an e21 transmission into a 2002. Oh, and if this isn't a tii transmission, what is it? Tried to talk to the guy about it, but he didn't know much... or something.

Thanks for your help!

YYYEEEEEAAAAAHHHH!!!!!

If it is a real 5-speed, it looks like a close-ratio one that was offered by BMW as an option. Note the 2-piece case, clutch release lever hole and mounting boss for the slave cylinder in the bellhousing.

Nicky, to answer your question, there is no such thing as a "tii transmission." tiis had the same four-speed as other 2002s.

I agree with the other poster who said that, because of the two-piece case and the hole in the bell housing for the clutch slave, it's most likely a mislabeled four-speed.

A close ratio 5 speed was defiantly offered as an option.

I had asked this of MT & Alex Hartz or Hartzman (sp) someone that would know.

I was told it was an expensive option & not many folks ordered it so the numbers are low.

You would think living on the autobahn everyone would have ordered it.

I don’t know what the differences are but do remember them telling me a shorter mid-section in the case. I would have to dig the old email out as I never pursued it.

I don’t know how to identify them but I do know for sure there was a close ratio 5 speed offered for the 02.

Not a Tii specific gearbox but any 02 at the time.

This is a hot topic (the 5 speed) so I’m sure the experts will fill you in with accurate data.

Just thought I would let you know there is a original close ratio 5 speed out there in case you have the real deal. Research before you buy but don’t let it pass if it is original.

a Is this definitely not a 5-speed from an e21?

It's definitely not. E21 had clutch cylinder mounted in different way.

It sure looks like a 4-speed.

My original response is incorrect. Your picture looks like a stock 4-speed due to the 2-piece case and clutch mechanism. Close ratio unit for the 2002-series would have a 3-piece case. 5 Speed O.D. units came in either 2-piece or 3-piece cases.

Here is some good info courtesy of the Metric Mechanic website.

yes it was an expensive option

here is the BMW Repair Manual installation

procedure to install in a 4-speed car

of course the drive shaft, shifter platform, and cross member are

different, and you would of course order those parts from

BMW to complete the installation.

It is a fragle PORSCHE type sycro design which is why no one uses

it today, rebuilding is as much as your car is wurth.

Have a great time

tiis did come with a 5-speed transmission as an option in Europe and elsewhere.

However, USA-spec tiis all came off the line in Munich with four speeds as part of the NHTSA emissions and safety standards. They could not be "ordered" from an option sheet like cars from Detroit.

In extremely rare cases, it's possible that a USA-spec car was refitted with a factory five-speed either in Germany (if the buyer had purchased the car in Europe and had the 5-speed transmission refitted there) or if some enterprising dealer or aftermarket supplier (like Miller-Norburn) bought a bunch of five speeds and installed them here after purchase with factory parts.

It's definitely a 4-spd. The guy doesn't know what he is talking about. I already emailed him about it. He's had it listed every week or so since November and I believe previously he listed it as a 4-spd. C/R 5-spds are longer, ala
