Dupli-color chrome paint on rims

In the process of re-doing my 14"basket weaves. I don't care for the dull aluminum color for my car, it's being painted bright red. I stripped and painted one of the center caps dupli-color chrome and wow it looks nice and bright. My question is, if anyone out there has experience with it, will this paint stand up as wheel paint? Should I coat it with a few coats of clear krylon to make it tougher?

I don't think this is a stupid question since its no fun stripping and repainting an item when someone out there may have a good answer

I've had great luck with all of the Duplicolor products I've tried. I find it superior to Krylon, especially the chrome paint. Why not go with the Duplicolor clear wheel spray after you paint? I did some wheels a year ago and they look as good as the day they were painted.

My car is verona. I just did three sets of wheels (mesh, steelies and e30 steelies) with a single can of silver Rustoleum Hammered Finish. The beauty of it is that the finish "hides" minor imperfections. They turned out great! Best $5.99 I have spent in a while. Use light coats and allow ample time to dry in between coats and you will have splendid results.

My initial reaction is that chrome would not be as durable as the silver or aluminum finishes (more solids). Since the color coats are mostly for show anyway, you might get some durability with the correct clear finish. Try the Duplicolor high performance wheel coating (HWP103) which is specifically made for wheels. Hopefully you won't get a reaction between the two finishes. The best option in my opinion would be to clear coat with a urethane finish (normally used on the body panels).--Jim

I sanded mine and painted with duplicolor black paint and then the duplicolor clear they use on the wheels. I should have put more clear on, as in a year the clear started to flake... so yes a couple good coats of clear is good.

Then make sure not to wash wheels with anything to abrasive in the form of cleaners... soap and water. The Wheel Wax is a good product to keep brake dust off the rims and after a month of letting the paint cure is what I put on mine. what little brake dust that was left on the rim either washed off with water, or just normal car wash soap and very little scrubbing.
