BMW 2002 TI question....just 120hp????

Was this accurate? It had a Tii dizzy, a 300 degree cam, high compression pistons, and twin carbs and it just put out 120 HP? I would have thought that all that in a car would give you more like 140+....or am I wrong in my specs...was the Ti just a standard 02 with a dual carb setup?

That sounds a little low. I would tend to agree with your 140 assessment,

based on flywheel hp, 10:1 compression and .400 valve lift

and 32 mm chokes in the carbs.

120 at the wheels? Sure!

Testing in Europe is a little more stringent than here. You rarely saw the wildly over rated hp numbers that you could get from domestic manufacturers.

I'm led to understand that typically, the rated horsepower/ top speed/ whatever metric was usually the worst case scenario. So if you can imagine all the factors that might negatively affect horsepower (heat, altitude etc) and dyno test under those conditions, then I believe that was their stated hp.

Yeah, but the Tii is the highest normally aspirated 2002 stock at 130 HP...Ti was rated at 120 and the 2002 at 100....I am just wondering what was up with that 120 rating? Was it detuned for reliability or something? Alpina's kit has similar parts and the engine is rated at like 150.....Ahhh...just looked it up...the Motorsports cam was 300 degree...not the stock cam...so the tii had a stock cam, and just dual carbs and a tii-like exhaust manifold. Hence the 120 hp. I did see it rated at 139 in a European spec sheet.

The 120HP figure you quote is for a stock 2002ti. They did NOT come with a 300 degree cam. You could buy that cam from the dealer, but I have not read of BMW installing any.

2000ti NK sedans and 2000CS coupes came with the same engine, all rated at 120HP.

Besdies the Solex PH44 sidedrafts, these engines had 9.3:1 pistons, the same cam as other 2002s, the same clean exhaust manifolds as the later tiis and a distributor set up for theses specs.

DIN horsepower or SAE horsepower?

They are slightly different horses.

I'd be more interested in running the car on a dyno and watching the torque curve -- which -- as I understand -- can be measured in nm, DIN, SAE, etc.

I just changed my 2bbl Weber 32/36 over to the Ti Solex 40PHH carbs. (stock engine)

http://www.bmw2002faq.com/component/option,com_forum/Itemid,50/page,viewtopic/t,334735/highlight,/

I don't have an actual dyno, but my seat of the pants dyno says that there is a big difference between the 2 with the Ti's delivering more get up and go that the Weber could only dream of. There is a very noticeable difference in power with the Ti set up.

Ohh, and there's that sound of the throttles opening.....

Yeah, now put more cam in and those carbs will REALLY get to breathe.

With the stock cam, I do believe that 120's in the right ballpark.

It's pretty darned conservative.

The solid number I posted above was from a dyno... with a cam

that specs a little better than a Schrick 305...

fwiw.

Yeah, eventually I'll get a HP cam. I'll probably get a cam that is not as "wild" as the 300-305 as the wife will be driving it also.(well, maybe she'll be driving it- the choke knob adds another level of "complexity" that she may not want to deal with). LOL

Right now I'm doing the external stuff (carbs, ignition, etc) maybe a header and exhaust system. Later on, I'll get in to the internal engine mods (cam, 5 speed OD,etc).

The Ti never came with 300° cam. From memory, the 1800TiSA had a 300° cam though. The Ti's extra 20 poneys only came from twin carbs and slightly higher comp. Not bad though.
