Insurance for my 2002 as a daily driver?

Yo FAQ-ers! So I just got my first 2002, it's a 1972 Malaga. I will post pics when I get her back from the doctor (radiator refurbish and minor tuning).

As I need to insure the car asap, I am curious to all you guys that have 2002 daily drivers, what insurance company are you with? I applied for Classic Collectors through infinity but was denied because of "insignificant driving experience" (as well as the obvious fact that I'll be driving it every day). Everyone tells me that insurance rates for 2002's are super good, so I wanted to see what everyone else has and how they feel about it.

A little more info: I live in Echo Park, Los Angeles. My daily commute to work is only to Downtown LA, which is under 8 miles round trip. Bought the car for $2500 from a guy named Alex in Alta Loma. The car has a salvaged title.

Any help, suggestions, or feedback in general would help a lot. Thanks a bunch...

PS: Also, just wanted to add that the first thing I did was a very extensive search of the site looking for info on the topic, but mainly got discussions about collectors insurance (which I'm not looking for/don't qualify for). Thanks again guys.

Ah yeah. I am 22, but this is actually my first car ever. Been planning it out for almost 3 years and it's finally come to fruition. Hoping mine isn't as pricey still...

In California your insurance rates are going to vary as much as the weather does. Age, Neighborhood you live in, driving record, lack of previous insurance, sex, and what you do for a living all have the potential to affect the cost of insurance for you. My suggestion is check all of the larger insurers yourself (Geico, Progressive, State Farm, etc) and then check in with one or two insurance brokers. Just make sure you're always comparing apples to apples.

scestes has good info too. All that is true. I can't believe us men pay more than women to get insured haha :(

Oh I have allstate. Oh and for example, if I was on my own plan it would pretty much double the cost of my insurance. I also get 21% discount for having good grades. You can also convince them to give u some discounts by taking a driving safety class or even those bmw driving classes they offer here in the bay.

Yup once you find the cheapest company its all about what kind of coverage you want that gets the price up or down easily.

Safeco gives us an agreed value policy on our '02's insured as drivers.

We do have other cars, so that might factor in.

Allstate (>gak<) insured me when I was younger

and driving a 2002 and a 122 as dailies.

years--as former military, I insure thru USAA--never had a problem, even after some strange damage (piece of truck tire dented nose panel on the interstate, something washed off a building roof at work and ruined paint on trunk lid and roof.)

I drop all coverage except comprehensive during the winter when the cars are off the road, due to heavy salt use here in OH.

No more hassle than insuring my newer cars.

I use Progressive online. Love them and they are cheap to boot. Although every year they call and tell me my 2002 is a BMW motorcycle and i have to confirm that it is indeed a car.

$83 for 6 months, but I am not 22 anymore (sigh) and it's not my only car on the policy. (also no comp or collision since, like your's, I only paid $3,000 for it)

Awesome guys, thanks so much for the feedback. Lots of help. I ended up calling a few places to get quotes yesterday, here's what I got (all quotes are for liability only):

AAA: $1,449/year or $145/month

Access: $762/year

Geico: $2400/year

Alliance United: $56/month

--------

I am still going to check a few places, but I am probably gonna end up with Alliance United. All the big companies have given ridiculously pricey quotes for first-time drivers.

You are in love because your premium is low. What happens when you need to file a claim? Will you be satisfied if they offer to pay for a new seat, tank, handlebars and saddle bags?

As mentioned before, the advice given here is pointless unless you have the same age, location, driving HISTORY, multicar discount, military record etc. as the applicant. Or, if Mike adopts you, you are a member of his household and you like beavers.

Mike, what's your adoption policy? Can I cancel my BMWCCA membership and use yours? You got cable in every bedroom? I also want a new phone and can my friends come over at all hours of the day or night?

agreed value policies for DD collectors is basically non-existent

if your 02 is only worth $1500 on the market, then it's no big deal

if it's worth more, you want to be protected in the event some soccer mom rear-ends you. which basically means an agreed value collector's policy that has very strict usage limitations.
