The Adventures of Meintii, The "NO CUT" M20 Swap

So this project blog is only about 4 years too late, but I figured that since I am almost constantly upgrading, or fixing something of my 72 tii aka meintii, I might as well go ahead and document the last few years of restoration.

These pictures started from when I got her in September 2004, and are continuous up to this year.

Well... here we go.

Small story about me and this car:

For those of you that dont know, this is my 72 tii, which I got for my 14th birthday, and had running and ready to drive by my 16th b-day. I have been through alot with this car, and met alot of people from the forum, and even more people from other local BMW groups. I have decided to get this album together so I can have a written record of my trials and tribulations though this whole process.

I am going to go through my pictures and post, in order, my restoration!

It's friday night, so Im going to see how far I can get today.

Well, what a better way to start off my 14th birthday then with a brand new tii! .. well kind of.

My parents were quite clever and gave me a red BMW hat, and when I put it on I felt something inside the hat... and guess what?! KEYS!!!!!

Before1copy.jpg

Immediately I ran out into the garage to see the beauty that was my 1972 2002tii!!

Not bad looking, but not at all what I wanted to be seen driving in :D

And here it is when I got it.. Believe it or not, as you can see in my facial expression, I saw the future and the potential of this car.

I gave her a really thorough cleaning with comet and scrubbed for about 2 hours.

I took all the trash and crap out of the interior, and moved it into the garage again to try and get it running.

After new points and condenser, distributor cap, battery some gas, spark plugs, (about $100 worth of my b-day money) and a few more hours of tinkering and she was running!

A few days later I took her for her first drive down a street that is just a bit down the road from my house. It was great fun to have my new ride back on the road!

This was her home for awhile whilst the shop was being built. After sitting and being stripped of her body parts, and then the shop got completed and she moved into her own bay!

Image104.jpg

Image109.jpg

My next task was to take off the wheels, So I could send them out to get straightened and powder coated.

We are now into August of 2005, and after working with a contractor all summer, I was able to make a good bit of money ($50 a day).

I saved up enough money to buy a new nose to replace my crushed one, and also to buy some tires for my ATS classics.

At the counter of the BMW dealer.

Took it to a local shop called Paton Brothers to get the nose work done.

And $200 later, I now have nose painted the color my car is going to be, which I decided to have it done in a 2005 5 series color called Titanium Grey Metallic, and I think it turned out quite well.

Now that she has her new nose, its time to remove everything else on the interior, and all other body parts, (leaving the engine and suspension on).

The reassembly process went really fast, since I had to have it done by the time I turned 16, which at this point was only a few months away, and since I had everything all clean and ready for putting back on the car.

The Interior was really fun to do, I ended up getting a new carpet set and insulation for about $200, and now Im wishing that I got it from esty for her beautiful collection, because this stuff isn't holding up very well.

Interior completely stripped, prepping for the insulation.

I found a 79 320is with a perfect interior, and a blown engine for $900, so I bought it for the seats; since they were beautiful.

I had already started taking it apart here.

Now that the interior is complete, and most of the exterior stuff is back on, she's almost ready for the road.

Got the wheels back and mounted on the tires

P1010266-2.jpg

Finally got her outside to wash her for the first time since she has been painted, So I decided it was the perfect time for her first (of many) official photo shoots.

Well. My birthday fell on a friday, and just happened to be the first day of the Le Mans and road ATL, so my dad decided to ride with me in the 02 , after I went and aced my drivers test (and skipped school)!

Showed my car at the BMW car corale, and got many compliments!

Picture267.jpg

Picture265.jpg

I was really happy to have the love of my life back on the road for the first time in 10 years (legally), and as a bonus some random guy let me take his brand new (at the time) E46 M3 out on the road because he liked my car so much (fast as hell!!!)....AND My dad signed me up for three parade laps around road ATL!

I was SOO exicted!! I got to drive my tii on a race track the first day I got my license! I also scared the crap out of my dad with how fast I was attacking th turns (like all the other cars), we did the whole slow down and leave a bunch of space between the car ahead before the turn, and then hit it to go as fast as you can around the turns. Of coarse so did everyone else since it was BMWs only!

Not a bad way to spend my 16th b-day id say!

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
