Drive Shaft Woes

Hello all,

I've steadily been wrenching on my 73 daily driver and have come to yet another bump in the road...or should i say under my seat. I was out and about running errands when pulling away from a stop when a LOUD thumping started coming from under my seat. I pulled over and didn't see a thing and thought it must be coming from my D/S. so, i guess my question is should i look for a used drive shaft to replace the whole thing or just replace the individual components (center bearing, flex disc)? any help is greatly appreciated. thanks to all in advance.

regards

hely

ps. anyone have a drive shaft they'd like to sell? ;) im located in downtown long beach.

I"b betting your guibo is shot... This happens, I have one that came soo far apart I'm thinking of making a necklace out of the peices.

It's hard to see when they crack and fail sometimes, you'll need to do a close inspection.

Haven't ever heard of anybody destroying a drive shaft, not sayin' it couldn't be done with a gazillion HP.

Most likely guibo dying.

...and i'm betting the caller didn't even look under

the car yet but just asked us to diagnose it - long distance????

right up there with "will these wheels fit?"

my turn to whine.

try:

drive shaft

exhaust system

clutch

half-axles

stub axle

motor/trans mounts

......?

put it up and crawl underneath. Then start tugging on things.

Preferably driveshaft related. But if you need to, well... nobody

ever says much about the noises they hear coming out from under a car.

i believe my question was misunderstood.

my center bearing went out and i am going to replace it. i found a used ds for $50 and am thinking of buying that and just replacing the entire ds for a known good one rather than refurbishing my own. should i just replace the worn parts on my own ds or buy the used one?

thanks again

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
