Noob in help. First off I would like to introduce myself. Names B from SoCal. I never worked on german cars before but I have past experiences with japanese imports (civics and my daily drive 2001 corolla). My eye caught a red BMW2002 at the bank a couple years ago and it never left my head. Now I'm on the hunt for a 2002 of my own. I have put in some research on buying a 2002. So far I have looked into the kryptonite of the 2002. . . Rust. I have printed "18 Most Common Rust points on BMW 2002" on some other forum. I have also read the article "buying guide for BMW 2002" by Richard Stern. I have also don't some light browsing on this forum. On the stand right now is a '75 2002. I need your expertise on whether this is a "no" or a "go". The description follows is right off craigslist

*I have also talked to the owner over the phone. He has own this car since 1997. It has been his daily driver for over a year. The only accident that he is "aware" of is having one the wheel fall off while on the road. he said it happened because he used an air gun to tighten the lugs. i am not sure what to make of that he also said the suspension is pretty beat up. He doesn't drive it on the freeway on account of the suspension. All of the electronics works besides high beam because he said his fuses was sensitive. As far as rust the only bad parts he said was rear passenger panel. he said it needs to be replaced or wielded. I am going to go check out the car tomorrow. I will take some pictures. This is going to be a long term project. I am going to be committed to this but i want to know if this is the one. I have a daily driver already so im not worried about the car sitting. I have looked into getting rid of surface rust; it doesn't seem to bad. I am not going to be able to weld anything myself so how much does that usually run. I appreciate any information shot my way. Thank you

I will leave the link if anyone wants to check out the pictures. I haven't figured out how to post pictures yet.

that looks worse than my car, which i sold for $1000 after spending over $10k on it (over about 8 years). You are MUCH better off buying a $5-8k car. Every dollar you spend now is four you won't have to spend later! Trust me that is really how it works.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
