im having fuel gauge problems. the needle just jumps around violently all the time. i have no idea why. i talked to this one guy who said it may be the fuel level sender, but i don't think that is it. any one have any idea on why this is happening? i have already run out of gas on the way home twice. needles to say it is getting old.

many have had this problem---you're looking at having to provide a better ground for your cluster or doing a search on fuel sender troubleshoot--scoyote

If both the fuel and temp gauges twitch--esp when you switch on your turn signals or activate the brake lights, it's almost surely a bad ground at the gauge. Check archives for an easy fix.

If it's just the fuel gauge and the temp gauge is rock steady, the problem is most likely at the sender unit--bad ground there or bad contacts on the float inside the sender unit. Reparable but a bit of a delicate job. Again, check archives for procedures.

untill your get all the wiring connections cleaned

and sound - and maybe buy a new tank sender,

it's easier to keep the tank full than nearly empty,

which also contributed to the inside of the sender deteriorating.

any and all electrical connection cleaning inside the dash/cluster

long term water leaking past the windshield seal doesn't help
