In car camshaft swap...

Everybody always asks so I figured I'd share this morning's activities. Just did it to my jadegrun car in 1.5 hours. Pulled radiator, fan, and right grille, removed valve cover, upper timing cover and camshaft sprocket, removed camshaft spray bar and thrust plate, installed jig and cam slid right out (barely) through the right grille opening. We're buttoning her up right now. Not to bad at all long as you don't have a/c.

Budweiser...It's not just for breakfast anymore.

....so again - when ' everyone asks if you can R & R the

cam in the car? ' , the answer is no -

unless you use the Special Tool

is someone still selling the repro 'cam jig' ?

I can get you one, C.D. (a functional repro, though not exact). Only issue I've seen with the jigs is that they can bend a valve if not used carefully (if the operation is performed on the bench one can watch and avoid it; but if performed while on the car . . . )

no thanks - I don't need one.

I was just looking for the contact, like Rob Torres

2002HAUS.com - who I thought had made a very nice,

powder coated repro. For the benefit of others.

I looked at his site and don't

see one offered there at this time.

And your right about the bending of valves - one needs to be

mindful of the piston positions during the process

All need to be away from TDC

In the long run - it's still better (read, less chance for

ruining something) to perfrom cam removal with the

head off the motor

It is a matter that you can depress both valves at the same time or they will touch. Rob provides instructions with the tool.

A radiator shop is a good place to take a leak.

I have no idea what I'm doing but I know I'm really good at it.

Indeed, Jim. I presume you've used the jig and done the procedure on the bench, and - even when following the instructions (which I also have) - you've seen there's potential for the valves to touch. Doing it on the car means you cannot see the valves, and the jig is strong enough such that you can't feel them touch . . . and bend, perhaps.

That said, the procedure can be performed on the car. Nicely done, skipsfcr.

Oh - and Jim... I'm learning plenty from the Weber book I purchased from you. Thanks.

Sean Casey and I have done this more than a few times. :) Great way to do a cam swap on a Tii motor when you don't want to have to go and set up the linkage again. We like to get those pesky "Hot" cams out of Tii's easily. Sean has one of the factory tools like in Creighton's picture.

Here's a previous thread on the subject. Including a fresh cam in our 24 Hours of LeMons 76 2002 Stella the Art Car.

Rob @ 2002Haus and Mason Engineering sell them.

Robert in't Hout http://www.ridsfab.com/ makes them and a lot of the stuff that Top End Performance, Ireland Engineering and others sell... and is gearing up to sell the stuff himself. He is one of the original owners of 2002AD, and has more than a few Tii's and other saved goodies from the AD days.
