Roof Rust - What to do?

A recent snow storm reveled some roof rust that must have been sprayed over by the PO. It looks like some of it has been bondoed. I'm assuming this should be dealt with sooner than later? Is there something I can do to help (wirebrush + some product) or should I take it to a body shop?

Thanks in advance!

after the snow melts - SPRAY the car with WD-40 -

keep it 'treated' untill spring time - then attack the

body work

and/or/also DO NOT LEAVE A 30 YEAR OLD RUST MAGNET OUTDOORS

keep inside dry enclosure for the remainder of it's life.

SPRAY the car with WD-40 -

If you do that, you run the real chance of having paint problems when they

try to fix it. That shit (wd-40) is nasty for painting.

Those pix look odd to me- almost like mildew. Honestly, I'd take it

to a shop now, and get their opinion. Good way to find a shop

you like, and to impress them with the fact that you're not a bozon

When it is completely dry, clean the top and spray some rust converter, zinc phosphoric stuff, and then Eastwood's red-oxide rust encapsulator. It will last a long time. I swear by this combination. Etched primer will not protect for a long time if the top is left exposed to air elements.

The only thing WD-40 is good for is loosening rusted hardware. As a rust preventative it is useless. Ask me how I know.

Actually, WD40 isn't very good for that either. There are a number of much more effective products, like PB Blaster.

The "WD" stands for water displacement. Long ago, I used to use it on my Triumph TR3 to keep the ignition system (like distributor cap) dry in humid air. Never seemed to be a problem with BMWs.

Yup. the WD stands for water-displacement formula # 40. I believe the original recipe is a closely guarded secret that contains fish oil. No wonder you get "fish eyes" in paint after spraying it anywhere near a car.
