Yes, Again...Heater valve

I know this has been beaten to death, but I still cannot figure if I am missing something. I have searched the many valve topics, but cannot figure out what I am missing. My valve was completely frozen up and if there were any O-rings in there at one time they were dust when I finally got the thing apart.

In the pic below item #1, if you actuate the valve, there is play (about 1/32) in and out. You might see in the photo #2 inside the valve that the opening can move in and out. In the second pic I took the back off and showing what I thought I needed to refurbish the part. I replaced the O-ring that you see that fits that larger grove and the smaller one on the other side of the valve (you cannot see). In photo #3 there seems to be something missing that should go in the center hole maybe to push the valve inside so it keeps the innerds pushed in all the time. #4 just shows the lip that provides the space for movement. Is there a spring or nylon grommet that is suppose to ride in that "hole?"

Spent a lot of time messing with this and want to be sure it is right before reinstalling the heater box...an help?? Been driving with no heat for a couple weeks, its getting old!

Test the valve now before you install with a couple of hoses and a water source. i have yet to mess with my heater box so i cant really address issue directly.

Just my 02cents! have fun

On my '74 heater valve(I bought a complete heater box and the valve came with the box), all that needed to be replaced were the 2 O-rings. My valve was brass, but the cover didn't have the "arrow" on it like yours shown. The insides (where yours looks like there may have been a bushing/or spring) was slightly different (it had "bumps' in both the centers) and there was nothing(bushing/spring) in the centers of the peices.

Mine had what looked to be original flat bladed screws in it and didnt look to have been taken apart before. I think there was very minimal side to side play when it was put together, but it worked fine and passed a pressure check and has been working great since installed.

I'm pretty sure it won't pass a leak test as I can see a hairline of space on the small O-ring side of the valve. Anyone have a good valve they can look at taking apart to see all the bits that are suppose to be there? When I took this one apart, there were only fragments of the rings and bits, nothing identifiable. It does need to be the same valve as I have seen a couple different kinds with and without arrows.
