Automatic shifter Problem

So for whatever dumb reason I unscrewed the top half of the shift lever on my 73 automatic. upon putting it back together, i found that i was unable to shift out of park. However, if i loosen/unscrew the shift lever two full turns, i am able to shift to any gear like normal.

What on earth did i do, and how do i fix it?

.....not sure what you did - but maybe

a picture and understanding the function

of the shifter will shed some light.

I suspect you upset the pushrod

action, look at " A " in the diagram

Yeah i think you're right. the part i removed has a rod that is actuated by the button on the handle - when you push the button in it pulls up, and allows you to change gears. it seems like because it only operates properly when said handle is two full turns loose, that the female end that the rod connects with has sunk/fallen down/ is too low to be properly actuated when the unit is put together properly.

So it seems like i need to get that female end to be raised about half an inch. Any insight into how to get to it?

Thanks a lot for that picture, its a big help. where can i find pictures like that for other parts of the car that i'll eventually break? haha!

find a nice 'BLUE BINDER' , 2-volume, or 1-volume edition

of the BMW Repair Manual

or order the maybe no longer available BMW

repair manual on CD - but caution-

that 'older' issued cd likes to be in a older

computer.
