edit: I dont live with my mom and wife (that would be lame), they decided to hang out with a group of other ladies...

Looking good!

On some of the motorcycle forums, people like to use Simple Green to clean carbs.

Heres a set of carbs before cleaning.

I use K&L Cycle cleaner (very simular to Simple Green -citrus based) and I put it in a foaming hand soap dispenser and then put it on. The foam doesnt run off as fast as just squirting it on and stays in place longer to get the parts cleaner. Using the foaming dispenser also keeps me from going through alot of the Cycle Wash solution.

I "pre-clean" the carbs with Cycle Wash to keep the cleaning solution cleaner for longer in my ultrasonic cleaner. The Ultrasonic cleaner is pretty cool and it uses sound waves and a water solution to clean gunk off the carbs.

Prior to getting my Ultrasonic cleaner, I used the Simple Green method only and it worked pretty well. The inside passages were also cleaned with carb cleaner spray and , of course, blown out with compressed air.

They do look complicated, but they aren't as complicated as they seem to be.

Print out the pic above and lable the jets and stuff (ie- part #9 is size **) when you take them apart. Do 1 at a time and you'll have the other carb to use as a reference. (Usually there is no need to remove the throttle plates- butterfly valves)

Get yourself gasket kits (the O-rings deteriorate with age) and you'll be good to go!

yes, they look very complicated, but very simple to work on. Looks can be deceiving ;)

yup, easy to take apart. do one at a time (so you have one as reference in case you forget how to put the other one together!). put all the parts in a gallon carb wash can for an hour. take parts out, rinse, dry, reassemble with new gaskets. much easier than tooth brush and lube. and you will need to do this anyway before using....if they have been sitting very long need clean the old dried up gas out of the many internal passages. use spray carb cleaner with tube to blast in all the holes.

it gets much easier after the first, and second, and third, and fourth, and.......one!
