Drive shaft and guibo removal

Man my guibo bolts and nuts are so tight I can not budge them. I have the rear shaft loose from teh diff. I am removing the entire shaft to replace the center support and bearing.

My question is can the shaft just be slid out, guibo and all, from the tranny like in muscle cars? or is the output shaft bolted to the output from the tranny behind the guibo?

I'm not as dumb as I look

transmission by three bolts. The guibo is also attached to the driveshaft by three bolts as well. You must remove at least three bolts to detach the driveshaft at the transmission end. If you are replacing the guibo then you might as well undo the three bolts that attach the guibo to the output flange of the transmission and remove it together with the driveshaft.

But no room for an impact, the shafts are still in the car, can I just slide it out?

I'm pretty sure that I was able to get the socket over the bolt heads on the rear side, by keeping the impact wrench right-up against the drive shaft. It didn't center perfectly, but just enough to get them loose. I recall saying a few choice curse words too. Maybe that helps.

I just slide it out?

nope, there is no output shaft like the borg warner, muncie or other US traneys. If you leave the shaft connected to the rear you can use the brakes to hold the shaft while you remove the bolts. Any way, get a box wrench, I like the 6 point verity, a 3/8 shallow socket and an extension, the wobble kind works well, and a 3 foot section of pipe. Put the wrench on the bolt, traney side, and wedge it up against the floor and use your ratchet with the pipe on the end to loosen the nut. The higher you can get the car the easier it will be. Soaking the nuts over night will help. I think I removed the center support to get a bit more clearance at the guibo.

hth, Good Luck!

Make sure you are turning the right way also. Sometimes it is easiest if you put it in gear so it doesn't move and work one at a time. If doing it this way, disconnect the coil wire from the dizzy or coil so you don't have accidental starting, of course that would only happen most likely if the key is in the on position. Make sure you are turning the nut, not the bolt.

I've always been able to put an impact wrench on the rear-facing bolt heads; it just may require a short extension.

Whether you can leave the guibo on the output flange of the trani may depend on how it was installed. If the guibo was put on the driveshaft while the driveshaft was out of the car and the bolts were slid in from the back, you won't be able to pull them out without hitting the trani, and you'll have to unbolt the guibo from the output flange.

Keep in mind that the guibo is self-expanding, so once you get the nuts off, in order to actually pull the bolts out, you usually have to compress it with a big hose clamp.

I just removed the front guibo. As noted above, impact wrench is the way to go with a 3 inch extension and shallow thin walled socket. I used a 17 open end wrench to hold the other side.
