Tranny drop on a snowy day

Hey Jim, it's good to see you're continuing to make improvments to my 'ex' Tii! You will enjoy the five speed, it's great at highway speeds pulling less RPMs and also helps with MPG....

I'm hoping the steering center rod doesn't have to be removed for the new trans. install.

The center link isn't that bad to remove, I'll bring ya my ball joint popper. It will be out in 10-20 minutes with no damage.

Hey Jim,

Great photos, and good luck with the tranny! Having 5 is a nice treat on the highway.

I'll be dressed similar tomorrow, as I need to replace the exhaust on my 5 speed '92 525i touring. Your jack is a twin to mine, though I painted my wheels red.

And all the almost two inches of snow we had melted away before dark.

Nice work in the inclement weather! I feel your pain; last January I had to change the clutch in our Mini Cooper when it was a balmy 0 F in the garage. One trick to saving your hands is to get a box of latex surgical gloves. They make it easier to clean-up, and also keep your hands warm (to a point).

Now pray it goes back in as easily.

It does when you use a modification of your posted method using an extra alignment pin.... and seriously spend some time polishing the input shaft splines to make sure things slide in easily.

I was feelin' that cabin fever too!

I would have been doing the same if I had gotten off my ass and finished the Cobra - freeing up the other side of my garage. As I was shoveling the snow this morning, I was contemplating how I'm going to finish pulling the drivetrain from my donor car this week amongst all that fluffy stuff!

I don't like snow.

Best of luck with your efforts. I'm looking forward to meeting more of you 02 owners in the D.C. area soon.

After shoveling the steps and part of my driveway, Marshall showed up about 11:30am in his 4x4 Diesel Ford to deliver the tranny jack. Nice to see someone out who has the right equipment! Thanks again Marshall!

I continued to shovel after taking a quick lunch break and finally got both cars free at 2:30pm. Needless to say, I am whipped!

Ian - the snow we got is already in your neck of the woods. Adios to it.

I did use some surgical gloves to keep the grease off my hands when disconnecting the slave cylinder line and pulling the tranny itself. Its amazing how dirty the undercarriage gets. I scrubbed the hell out of the tranny when I redid the top end of the engine last year.

I wondered why you came back around the circle. You're a good man Charlie Brown. Goofy neighbors and their "all-wheel-drive" vehicles equipped with summer street tires.

While assisting the Corolla driver Saturday night, there was a late Model VW GTI trying to go backwards up Franconia. He'd get a good run then start swerving sideways (into oncoming traffic). Morons.
