slow rev question

Ok, just a general 02 question..I am new to 02's. The one I have has 75k original miles. It sat for over 15 years never started. I was the first to start it..idles well, installed new points etc. Car revs slow...hard to rev it much past 4000. Drives fine but top spped is about 70mph. Are these cars really this slow or is this the result of a 32/36 that is just old and not doing well? i bet i am not putting out more than 70 hp it feels

i will be installing dual 40s this jan anyway but am just curious.

Sounds more like an ignition issue than a carburetion issue. The vacuum advancer maybe inoperative or the breaker plate stuck / gummed up in the distributor. How did the distributor look internally when you replaced the points? Did you remove the distributor or rotate it at all while servicing the points? Really sounds like retarded timing. A worn out M10 will still take an '02 way faster than you can legally drive.

and your not opening the carb throttle FULL OPEN

when the gas pedal is held to the floor.

the carb throttle lever should tap against a stop

tab on the car - stand out side of the drivers door with

your right leg on the gas pedal, and you hanginf over

the open door looking at the back of the carb - listen

and watch the linkage tapping against the full open stop.

you'll figure it out from there

and sitting that long, the carb will need a minimum

of the top removed and the float bowel cleaned, accel

pump diaphram replaced, and all the passages blown clear

maybe the secondary circuit is plugged = your only getting indicated 70 mph out of it

theres a ton of other stuff to clean, adjust, replace with the motor before you try to go any faster anyway - for safetys sake

photos always hep us help you

70 mph probably = no 36 barrel on the carb.

Could be stuck, could be throttle linkage's slipped, probably

not a problem with fuel flow (or you'd go unrunnably lean)

And maybe no power valve, either.

The kits for the 32/36 are pennies ($16 here in Seattle from Autosport)

and it's very good practice to get this one working right- all Webers

think alike, even if they work differently.

And it's worth real money here in good working order.

AND the Haynes manual that you WILL be getting covers both.

I'd fix it.

You should top out around 110 mph.
