Help Identifying a 2002 year and model...

By no means an expert... it is an early model up to '73. That said Check out the extent of that rust before you buy it. The rear wheel wells are shot for sure and I shudder at the lurking rust under the paint around them. Check the rear shock towers in the trunk... that could be a deal breaker. Also there is some bubbling at the back of the front wells so check the rockers closely. Lastly, figure out why the front bumper is sitting at that angle. What did it hit? Check your frame rails all over the place and the motor mounts for accident damage. It looks like a lot of work to me and that is coming from guy who loves projects and loves cars with a little "patina" to them! Good luck.

**EDIT** P.S. if the price is right though it is still a damn nice car!

Pre-71 with the shorty bumpers and no lower trim.

and red centers on the rear lamp assembly lenses indicating its vintage, yet painted turkis or something close to it (modell 71 - 74). get some pics of the interior, under the hood and i wanna see those shock towers in the trunk!!! will give better idea as to extent of rust. we can get build date and original color from sending the VIN to BMW Classic (Mobile Tradition).

What you got there is a roundie.

You can tell because the tail lights are round. heh.

But all of this can be changed, so without some more details,

it's pretty hard to tell. (viz, the front marker on one side but not the other)

Anything between 1968 and 1973, certainly. (taillights)

After 1969.5, probably. (side mirrors and 3 of 4 markers, but no rear reflectors, no rear reflectors)

After 1971.5, maybe. (side mirrors, but no lower side trim)

Before 1972.5, probably. (rear bumper)

Before 1973, very likely (front bumper overriders)

If the mirrors are un- original (quite likely) you're looking at a 1969.5-

1970.5.

Rusty- certainly!

Certainly enough that I wouldn't pay more than $250 based on the pix alone.

Personal inspection could improve that.

Looks like it could be a "quilt" car with pieces from a few model years all together, so the VIN number is going to be the only real way to learn it's birth date. I suspect '70-'71 but really anybody's guess.

The lower door skins look like the Bondo Boys have been at it and the rear quarters are shot. Look at the rear shock towers (humps) for sure, rust or hints of, is a deal breaker and go at those rocker panels with a screwdriver (be ruthless).

It looks like a rust bucket to me, but the key is structural integrity. I, and many others here have successfully turned rusty shitheaps into real head turners.

Quick estimate: If you can do your own body and paint work, do your own wrenching (assuming it runs decent) and have the time to pick up parts as they show up and are not averse to using used parts. Purchase price plus $3500 will get you a nice car.

OR

Take that $4000 -$5000 and buy a decent California/ Arizona car and Bob's your Uncle.

as to the car's vintage...

the red center tail lights and lack of rear reflectors just above the bumper (presuming the tail lights are original) would indicate a 68 or a 69--amber center tail lights were installed starting with the 1970 models.

The seats (if original) appear to have headrests, so that would mean it was a '69, as '68s didn't have 'em.

The paint appears to be Turkis, but I'll wager it's a repaint, as that color was used only in the 72-73 time frame.

The VIN is gonna be in the 166xxxx-167xxxx series; once you can tell us what it is, we can pinpoint the year and month pretty accurately.

Actually, if you want to pick ze nits, amber showed up somewhere between

1666xxx and 16681xx, but given the mirrors, I wouldn't get too excited until

the vin pops up... and both of the above vins were built in '69, but

the later was sold as a '70.

And the rear reflectors showed up later. Technically, they SHOULD have

been on anything sold as a 1970, but practically speaking, it's really

unusual to see them on anything with 6 fuses (71.5)

I think it's still waaaay rusty...
