Rebuilding the Getrag 232 Four-Speed Transmission

What to do when my tranny has 160k miles?

Do I need to replace the worn gears? is there a kit? i don't want to convert to a 5 speed. Does anyone rebuild these things?

The post below talks about replacing seals, gaskets and bearings. There are more parts to it when doing a rebuild, right? How about all the metal parts that wear and tear?

Please help. Thank you.

If I needed a rebuild I would probably send it to Metric Mechanis in Kansas City , but it would cost a fortune. Your best bet is to find a used one with lower miles on it. Perhaps from someone who did a 5 speed conversion.

damn. i was afraid of that.

How about all the metal parts that wear and tear?

The synchronizers must be replaced if it is difficult to shift into a gear. If 2nd grinds but the others are smooth then the 2nd gear syncro must be replaced ect. The gears rarely go bad unless something metal is bouncing around inside. I am going to give rebuilding one a try as soon as I get my motor together.

[Edit] I forgot, the syncro sleeve might need to be replaced if the syncro ring is damaged.

From what I read in the post you mentioned it doesn't seem that hard when compared to the Borg Warner traney in my Trans Am which has needle bearings in it!!!!

What I'd like to know is what is the best source for the parts.

Good Luck!

Some of the parts for the 242 are available, are you sure you have a 232?

First off you don't need a special puller to get the front case off, and you don't need to trash in input bearings (those suckers are $$$$)

Pull all the bolts that hold the case together, remove the cover that holds the input shaft seal and remove the circlip. Once you take it apart, it will make sense. Sit down with the tranny between your knees hold the front case with them. Give the input shaft a couple hard raps with a 3 lb hammer and be careful the back end doesn't drop on your toe. If you're feeling anal, put a piece of scrap metal over the input shaft so you're smacking it and not the input shaft

Carl Nelson, La Jolla Indep, has all the parts you'll need. Prepare for sticker shock

As one who used to rebuild 3-4 of these transmissions a week, I offer this advise. Be careful if you use John's method. There is a small "stop" that keeps the input bearing in place that is part of the main housing. It is easily broken if hit too hard.

It is a good idea to replace the slider ring along with the syncros. I would think that all the output shaft spline problems are taken care of by now. G

The bearing is pressed in from the front of the case using a tool that locks the input shaft and slides the bearing down. There are shims on both sides of the bearing that have to be the correct size. The lip that I was refering to keeps the bearing/input shaft form moving to the rear. The snap ring keeps the shaft in position. I did my first transmission without using the tools and was lucky. I have the proper tools and believe me it is easier to use them. Also the tool that sets the bearing can be used to press out the input shaft. G

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
