I am in the process of installing megasquirt into my '76. I would like to do the install as cleanly as possible. That being the case I would like to remove any extraneous wires and bits that are no longer required. I bought the car in CA and the previous owner(s) had already removed the smog related parts but had left the wiring. Here are a few pics of stuff I found hanging around. I'm hoping someone can ID these so I can either use them for something or pull them all together. These wires were not attached to anything.

The first two are inside the engine bay on the radiator support.

The third is mounted near the radiator.

The last two are wires that were bundled in with the wires to the alternator and starter. My guess is they used to go to the carb that was once on the car. Choke or something?

The first two are part of your fog light switch system. Not sure about the middle one, maybe the voltage reg for the alt. Which brings me to the last one, 1 of the 3 prong connectors is for the alternator and the other looks like it could be for a relay

I didn't realize that the cars came wired for fogs, that's good news I'll see if I can find the other end in the dash. My alternator is wired to a single red wire, and grounded to the block. The plug that looks like it went to the alternator runs to the block that looks like it could be for a relay. I'll try to get a better photo of it.

Thanks for the reply.

Pretty sure the last two images are the wiring that goes from the alternator to the external voltage regulator. One line should go to the starter, and the other to a small silver box in front of the three relays on the driver's side of the engine bay (voltage reg)

they are actually not fog lamp wiring per se. they don't go back to the dash. they are taps off the low and high beam wiring. should be on on each side of the radiator support. i use the high beam tap to trigger the relay to turn on the driving light circut for my hella's.

you can see the taps and where they go in the wiring diagram posted.

Thanks for the help with the wiring. After getting the diagram posted above, which I can actually make out color codes etc.. I was able to verify that those two, three pole connectors were in fact for the alt and volt reg.. The harness had already been hacked into by the PO to install a internally regulated alt. I traced the blue D+ wire back to the firewall removed the harness from it and made a straight connection with a spade end for the alt.. Part of the harness had a wire the same diameter and color of blue as the D+. That wire goes to the diagnostic plug. I simply clipped this short at the diagnostic plug as it was part of the old harness and would not be used.

Last night while pulling the new + battery cable from the trunk I found another loose mystery plug. After starring at the diagram for about two hours I'm pretty certain it used to go to the 'thermal reactor service interval switch'. The PO also removed that switch and installed a single piece speedo cable, so I don't have anything to check it against. I'll probably just clip it out.

I am planning on installing a couple of sets of hella 500's that I wanted to run with high and low beams. I think I will utilize the wires that are already there to run the relays. Did BMW install a separate wire harness for fog and driving lights?
