Heater fan blows on the feet....

Question #1: I have not tried that before. Not sure an effective solution can be had.

#2: Yes there is some vent/heat issue going on in the heaterbox, it's time to rebuild the thing. :(

Grover on this list from El Cerrito is rebuilding heaterboxes. If you're interested in swapping out the heaterbox yourself, I'd give him a ring. OR give Sean at Casey Motorsports a ring to have the whole job done.

Or rebuild it yourself... a couple hours and a trip to ace hardware and mine was done. Don't believe all the BS about it being a bitch to get in and out of the car. It was not hard at all just uncomfortable sitting upside down under the dash.

Really though, for 20-30 the damn thing will work like new. There is a tutorial somewhere around this site and it's pretty damn amazing. go for it!

You may have a cable not working that closes the flap or the cable that closes the water valve.

The FAQ is in the '02FAQ section in the banner above.

Here is the link:

It really is a rewarding job to do.

I have the same problem with heater valve not closing all the way. So for now I just reach in and close my valve (by the heater fan) at the valve because the boden cable wont do the job. One of my many projects i am gonna do. Just want it on the ground for a few days before all the good weather is gone.

Hot air on the feet would feel good today- Damn temperature drop of 30 degrees in one day. I went riding Sunday in bibs and jersey; Last night in long sleeves and undershirt thinking I should have also brought a windshell.

For me, the hardest part of pulling the heater box is getting the damn control cable loose. The center console comes out easy, and the heater box is held on with two hoses, two nuts, and a few wires.

I also need to lie on my back and pull the heater box.

When I did my last one, I glued on new sealing foam on the flaps.

Agreed, it's not that bad a job. For the flaps foam, get some plain foam and use 3M spray permanent adhesive to attach it. The narrow self-adhering home weatherstrip that the hardware store sells doesn't stay attached to the flaps for very long. I found some sheet foam weatherstripping at Home Depot or one of it's cousins that has worked well for several years.

One possible frustration is getting the controls reassembled wrong inside the box. If it's back in the car when you discover this, life sucks the whole time you're pulling it back out. Also, bench test the heater box, including running the blower to make sure it isn't going backwards.

About the directed air.. There are supposed to be deflectors on both sides to spread the airflow out somewhat. Do you have these angles on your center console?? I didn't until I saw the tutorial and pics on the FAQ and on the web. Makes a difference, but not an answer to improving/reparing the controls. The tutorial here in the FAQ is really well done.
