Clunking noise from the rear.

Hi all, i like to work on my car (1972 EU tii) as much as i can but now i'm stumped!!

I have a cluncking noise from the rear of the car, it happens when i'm in gear and put the power down and lift off, if i'm smooth with the above i don't get a sound, the clunking is a really jerky feeling. If i just let the car roll in gear under tickover power the noise is really bad and it feels like the car is rocking back and forth.

All help is much appreciated,

Thanks Tom.

worn out spyder gears in the rear diff ? (remove the diff cover to see it)

really worn out drive shaft u-joint, or bolts loose at rear diff connection ?

rear diff mounting kaputt ?

rear subframe mounts rotten ?

trans mount is not mounting anymore ? (that's a given because

of how short life they have)

rear shocks or control arms are out of control and

rusted away ?

Get Out, Get Under, and LOOK for loose or missing parts

Thanks c.d,

So far i have checked the wheels, hubs, and half shafts (thanks Bill). Athe shocks seem ok there is no rust. the rear subframe mounts look good too. The diff mount is secure as are all the diff bolts. The prop shaft joints all seem tight and the rubber thingy in the middle is good. The rubber gearbox mount is ok'ish i think how much play should it have ( left to right, up and down?)

I am draining the diff as i type, what is the best way to get the cover off?

I've cracked all the bolts to the cover but it looks quite tight up there, the rear wheels are on a pair of ramps you reverse up, should i put a jack under the diff, will it lower enough once i take the mount nut off?

Thanks Tom.

you'll have to drop the diff to look inside it...

or rather, you really want to, because otherwise it's

going to be hell to clean it up enough to put it back together again.

Hi all thanks for all the items to check. I got the cover off the diff, all looked good and tight. I have a few more questions on testing them and the condition the parts should be in. The quibo? what sort of movement should i have on this item? Testing the top of the shock, i have bounced up and down on all, they sound fine. Colorobo you said about the tranny output flange being loose, i have checked all the bolts there is no lateral movement in the prop. The exhaust is not banging. I jacked the car up and lay underneath (it was on axle stands!) and a mate went through the gears we heard the clunking, with the back in the air the sound was at the front! I have ordered some engine and gearbox mounts it looks like the the engine is moving far to much. I should have the parts tomorrow avo will let you know how i get on, does anyone have any tips on fitting new mounts?

Thank you all.

Tom.

Ok, I remember what was going on with the cars. Clunk in one was almost like a bad automatic transmission (car was a standard tranny). You'd put it in gear, let out the clutch from a start and would get a clunk, like an automatic tranny with a bad torque converter. This I believe was attributed to a loose tranny output flange (no lateral movement) the large 29 or 30mm nut that holds it on the tranny was completely loose and the flange could go in and out.

On the guibo, look under archives about tolarable movement-this would not be your concern for the clunk. For the clunk, you'd know the guibo was bad on examination if it was the thing making noise, cracked, torn, loose.

Tranny output flange on this car I'm talking about had a loose 29 or 30mm nut, this made it slide in and out, not so much laterally. This nut should be torqued down pretty tight, but it was completely loose. Car clunked like an automatic tranny with a bad torque converter.

The guibo... look up in archives, but it would just look bad: torn or cracked.
