bianchini

Recommended Posts

so i need to replace my rear window before september. I would like to save as much money as possible doing this, but I am not experienced at all in replacing windows/seals. what kind of prices am i looking at from start to finish? the rear window is in good shape, the seal currently is pretty much dead... any insight/help?

do i use a professional service?

can i do it myself?

can someone on the board help?

how long will this take?

what else should i replace while im doing this?

thanks,

Pete

LOL! - My dad and I installed one in a '76 years ago and we had the same facial expressions! It can be done, but I am about to install the glass in my '76 and will let the pros do it this time.

I used a BMW dealer gasket and clip and a local glass shop. I cost 100.00 but worth it, it's done and no leaks. The front is next on the list.

edit: in the attached post CD is right on the money.

You can do it yourself.

The more of them you do, the more skills you gain and the less time each one will take. With more skills you end up with less errors.

I have only done 3 or 4 front/rear glass replacements. I think my success rate is 25% or so. I almost always end up with one corner that does not want to seat properly. My current windsheild has a crack in the lower left corner from when an over-zealous helper pushed too hard to get it to seat.

If I were young and strapped for cash, and it wasn't a show car, and I didn't live in a monsoon region, I'd try the install myself. Since time is less of a commodity for me, I'll probably buy the parts and pay a glass guy to do the install for me.

Like beammmer suggested, I'd go with a dealer gasket. Had my son's front replaced by a shop, but I bought the gasket off ebay and it doesn't fit exactly right, hasn't leaked so far but, the glass guy was really worried, and put extra epoxy around it and wished me goodluck. bob

elsewhere) gaskets just don't fit--my local glass shop found out the hard way--after four tries with aftermarket gaskets they finally listened to me and had a proper one overnighted from Max--it worked the first time. Bet they didn't make anything on that job...and they had my car five days!

Get the pros do it. You will need lockstrip, and a new gasket. Also get the little connector piece at the bottom of the lockstrip

I ended up pulling the front and rear window myself, and getting a body guy to beadblast the windshield area (Some surface rust, which you should definitely look out for) and and paint from the front windshield over the roof, and to the rear.

If you pull the window yourself, this will allow you to look for rust, find it and treat it. Otherwise if the window guy pulls it out, and you find rust then you gotta pay for him to come back again next time after you've fixed it.

I finally got around to installing my new windshield last night, it did take all of 5 minutes once everything was prepped and cleaned up. I used 0.065" diameter weed trimmer line to pull the seal lip in. Another 5 minutes to put the lockstrip in -- track down the Lisle tool and it goes in real easy.

If you're tempted to let a 'pro' do it, keep in mind that most of them do the modern glue in windows and don't have experience with old rubber gasket stuff. If the installer is not old, or says they've got experience, I'd run away. You don't want someone learning on your car. I've seen some bad ones done by 'pros'.

the connector piece is the seam cover for the lock strip... also called a "cup"

6.50 for the cup. 104.99 for the seal and 36.50 for the lock strip. black turbo lock strips are much cheaper at about 12 bucks. but the cups are 26 bucks. so if youre looking to do it on the cheap buy a turbo lock strip and paint your old cup black
