Body Work...what to do about rust staining?

The paint on my roof had cracked/scaled down to metal creating a spider web looking pattern of rust. My hope is to do a nice paint job in the near future, but for now I feel the need to address the problem and plan to throw on some rattle can until then. I stripped the paint, and have been using a flap disc to take of what remained. However, the rust has stained the metal so the spider web like appearance is still visible. The wire wheel is not doing the trick and the flap disc does not remove it too well.

What should I do? Do I need to get the rust staining off before paint? Should I use a heavier grit paper and take off more metal? Is there a polish I can use to rub the staining out?

Thanks for the advice...

you need to remove the rust, whatever it takes, and start with "fresh" metal. This can be done by sanding or sandblasting, take your poison. A wire wheel should work on surface rust, but since it is not working, your have some work to do with heavy machinery. This should be in the archives, do a search and I am sure there is a 1-2-3 on what to do next.

Phosphoric acid will 'seal' it and stop further rusting.

Then the rattle can will protect that, and you'll be good until it's repaint

time.

If it's not a huge area, the 'spot' sandblaster from Harbor Freight will

etch out the last of the rust with minimal damage. Be careful with

anything heavier, because it's easy to warp the roof.

I like the 3M stripping discs- the ones that look like matted hair in a disc

that you chuck in your drill- I find that they can get the rust out of the

bottom of a spot without removing much metal, or heating it too badly.

After your flap discs, it should be an easy trick to just clean up the spiders

with this (relatively slow) process.
