I've taken my late model BMWs and 02 to Phaedrus BMW and am happy with the results. They are not cheap, but they know how to work on 02s. One of their mechanics has been working on them since '76.

If it really has to be in S.F., I used this place for my old e34, but it was recommended by a 2002 friend (who used them as their primary service guy) and the owner has a M2 and a e30 m3 w/ s52 motor of his own there: http://www.yelp.com/biz/silver-star-auto-service-san-francisco

I have used Phaedrus in the past (and have known Spencer for over 20 years), but I will not go there anymore after they tried to charge me for work they were not authorized to perform and got pissed when I told them that they should have gotten my authorization first. I think his exact quote was "If that's how you want to do business, you're not welcome here." My response: "Don't worry about my continued business because, yes, I want to do business with a shop that complies with the law." Did I mention that I've known the for over 20 years? Oh, I didn't pay the bill, either.

If you don't mind driving a bit try D&M Motors in Palo Alto. Give them a phone call first to make sure they will work on your car.

Dieter was a factory trained mechanic from Germany who started his own shop. I haven't talked to him in years but found him to be honest and he insists his mechanics do what the customer wants.

i just stumbled on your 2009 post and was distubed by what i read. i don't know who you are but would like to know what happened. we do our best to comply with the law and sometimes take too much freedom with getting the car done over getting authorization since we deal with alot of peoples'

deadlines. let me know what happened.
