so today i replaced my alternator with a freshly rebuilt bosch AL41X. and when i went out on a spin, the "L" lit up and my engine died. i already tried an external regulator with my old alternator, so i dont know what it could be now.

also, the "L" and the engine dying seemed to only happen on a down hill?

do i need a new starter? distributor? anything?

Check the connections on alt, battery and grounds both.

Maybe you have a bad battery, i have heard that a bad alt can kill a good battery and a bad battery could kill a good alt. See if you can have your battery load tested, take car to local Autozone or checkers, they should be able to do that check for free. IF good possibly the voltage regulator.

Re-check all wire connections and connectors. I just went through this over the weekend. Installed two alternators and three voltage regulators, turned out to be the + wire to the alternator was coming apart at the connector. We found it by wiggling the wiring at night.

Good luck!
