Sorta OT: My girlfriend's Saturn won't start - clicking

My girlfriend's 98 Saturn SL wouldn't start this afternoon. When you turn the key, all that happens is a loud, fast clicking sound. The blower and radio all work fine. Is this a starter relay clicking because of a dead battery? We tried jumping it and it would still only make the clicking sound.

My hunch is a dead battery, but I wanted to check with you all first.

Thanks, and sorry for the non 02 post.

Check connections, grounds. Hate those 'lectrical issues -especially when there are more than six fuses.

If getting a new girl friend is outta the question, you might try cleaning all the connections between the battery, starter and ground strap. Its very common for connection to go bad when the weather changes for the worse. Cold, damp, blah blah...

In the meantime, just let her drive your M-coupe! 8-)

1. First make sure all connections (at battery, starter etc) are clean and tight.

2. Turn on headlights so you can see their brightness

3. Hit starter. If lights very noticeably dim, suspect battery; if lights stay bright, suspect starter.

4. Final test: Run hot lead from battery to starter solenoid. If starter now works, it's the relay, wiring or ign switch. If nothing but clicking, it's either the starter motor or solenoid.

Happy troubleshooting

Mike
